It's a cudgel people use to paint large groups of people with a broad brush unfortunately. There is nothing stopping me from posting collages of tweets from bigoted rude people who support other people, other than the knowledge that the same people on here who scream about Bernie Bros would undoubtedly find excuse for it  Just earlier today I was talking to someone on facebook about the fact that Bernie has the least white base of support (the only one under 50% in the field - Pete's is in the high 80s for comparison) and he cussed me out and said that unfortunately facts and data don't fit my narrative  but also told me that me and my "bros" need to stop being so "damn divisive"... the irony of it all  

Ppl like that exist from every side.

 

I have a rule. The moment someone starts getting personal or agressive I end the conversation there and then because nothing productive is coming out of that so what's the point?

 

When ppl get agressive and toxic and make personal jabs they are not in a state of mind or with an attitude where anything valuable exchange or ideas can occur. Ppl like that don't care about considering other views and just wanna prove u wrong

 

I don't think I've been able to convince anyone from any side of this yet but...

 

As someone whose on active debates among communities all over the political spectrum I do not see any evidence what's so ever that any one side is any more enlightened in general than another in terms of being civil, respectful, or not toxic when arguing (regardless of who may be right or wrong)

 

In ppls minds it's always the other political side or other supporters who are the problem but all sides have toxic ppl and to me the proportions of ppl who are toxic don't seem to vary significantly from one political isle to another

 

The exception would be politicians (say trump) who are outright racist and prejudice in all kinds of ways their bases are always exceptionally bigot like

 

But excluding that... Seems like a pretty big constant right, centre and left alike

If there's nothing else I can convince you of, let it be that this is only part of the equation.

I would wager that people - mostly on the internet - are not in a state of mind where a valuable exchange of ideas can occur regardless of the tone you convey your argument with, and that coming from a place of "if I am respectful, I can change minds" is somewhat naive  It's certainly been my experience on here on this website for the last 8 or so years  

And thats because some ideas themselves are dangerous to people (Not in a like, authoritarian way  ) 
I mean If you don't want to believe something, you will likely contort yourself into any kind of shape that allows you to refuse reality.

Being perceptive of the behaviors of people who demonstrate a willingness to listen to other perspectives compared  to those who do not is a skill. It saves a lot of mental energy.
