My Indian grandparents are disgusted with the way white people in the US let dogs sleep with them, “kiss” them, etc. You can’t hold dogs at a higher level of animal life than cows, pigs, chickens, etc. It’s extremely hypocritical, not to mention HIGHLY ethnocentric, to look down on people who eat dogs if you’re not vegetarian. Wet markets or live markets are extremely dirty places and common in many parts of Asia including large cities in China. Animals are kept in close proximity and the areas become breeding grounds for various illnesses such as influenza (nCoV is a strain of influenza) and can be passed into humans through contact with the animal or consumption of the animal. Rather than, it were through consumption of intermediate animals that had been infected by bats or snakes virus. Yeah I agree that Westerners are generally dumb when it comes to news. Most Americans don't look for context or proof with news. Directly consuming any animal that is infected can get one infected with nCoV. But scientists are saying this specific strain likely came from bats and snakes. We view dogs as family members, even sleeping with them, whereas other countries view them as a food source because they do not have that emotional connection. I have three dogs and love them like family, and am still haunted by a video of officers in China going around and bludgeoning dogs on the street in the head. I'm legit scarred and had bad dreams for weeks. But it's also important to note that in some countries, dogs are considered dangerous. They attack people on the street and spread disease. Sometimes, though I believe eating dogs is wrong, it is important to put things in context. Imagine there is a country that worships chickens, raises them as pets, dresses them up, sleeps with them, and takes Christmas card photos with them.
