Billie Eilish thinks a lot of hip-hop right now is lying about guns & women

What you are saying is contradictory: how does she "present" herself as non-mainstream and dark when she herself talks about liking Justin Bieber, when she herself spent half her acceptance speech for her album award praising Ariana's record, when she herself l i t e r a l l y said in a recenr interview: "I don't view myself as dark, no one around me would say I'm dark".

See what's going on here? "Dark and non-mainstream" is how YOU view HER. It's not how she defines herself, by far. People would much rather believe their perception of someone than listen to that person and actually try to find out what they are. I don't blame you - there are many more important things in life than knowing Billie Eilish - but you see how it can get annoying when people judge her based on how they view her and not how she is.

C'mon..  this is her aesthetic. From her music videos to album cover to the way she dresses. She does present herself as dark and non-mainstream and this disqualifies her from cricising other artists or genres when they do the same.

She is talking about hip hop artists being hypocrite because they rap about women and guns when do not have women an guns, therefore the implication is that they are posers  yet she is presenting herself as a dark and non-mainstream when her idol is Justin Bieber.

:lmao:

That's like saying Gaga is a hypocrite for making pop music when Black Sabbath is one of her favorite songs of all time. Girl what.

I didn't know baggy clothes belonged to hip hop artists. I also didn't know edgy lana del Rey type music belonged to hip hop artists.

Baggy clothes dates way back then. Hiphop artist brought it in the mainstream consciousness. Search 1990s hiphop fashion.

also lana del rey,  as much as i love her music. Most/some of the beat patterns are hiphop/trap. So theres that. The difference is the way she sang it which makes it more pop or alternative. But the beat or pattern is mainly hiphop.

Billie eilishes aesthetics are done by underground hiphop artists. I know a few. For example, bury a friend can be a close relative to kanye west song blkkk skkn head from his yeesuz album (but some hiphop can also be  linked to rock as both this songs can be directly linked to marilyn mansons song beautiful people)

So yeah. I like billies music though :vegas:

She's right and if Gaga said it everyone here would've defended her. But it's Billie, so yeah.

If Gaga had said it, everyone on twitter would be dragging her to hell, calling her old, white and privileged.

She's not wrong.

Although a lot of rappers do live that lifestyle, well used to be for rappers back in the 80s to 90s, then it got a little phony

I agree that there's nothing admirable though about showing off that lifestyle, drugs, money, "bitches". It's almost going to be outdated, but just like rockstars would sing about doing drugs with groupies, hip hop has its own culture and those who don't fit in with the 'image' will lie about it. A few won't, like Eminem and whatnot but it's rare

It's one thing you accept that you are mainstream and release accessible music while your inspirations ARE obscure and one thing you pretend you are all edgy but stan Justin Bieber. :rip:

I’m confused where she’s trying to present herself as edgy?

She literally said she doesn’t see herself that way, so I don’t get it.

OT: It’s impossible nowadays to not let hip hop influence your music. The width of hip hop culture is so wide that it’s unavoidable, and Billie’s fashion sense is very clearly rooted in black culture. There’s nothing wrong with that, but I do agree that she shouldn’t be the one to talk about a black genre. The quote was heavily taken out of context here, but even so, it’s not her place to criticize a black genre as a white girl who credits numerous hip hop artists as key influences of her.
Also, all these criticisms of Bad Guy are ridiculous. It’s satirical. Y’all ain’t pressed Kesha sang about being a Cannibal back in the day, it’s the same thing here :selena:

Her fashion choices, the way she talks and behaves, her persona, her music videos, her album covers, her photoshoots, music videos, song lyrics and productions. In all of these she presents herself as edgy, non-mainstream and dark.

If you say that she even admits herself that this isn't who she is then the disconect is even more concerning.

If Kesha complained about artists being posers she will get the same criticism. :hor:

I’m just saying, she doesn’t see that as her trying to be edgy. She’s expressing her art in a way she feels she wants to and I don’t think there’s anything wrong with that. The people trying to be edgy are a lot of her fans imo.
This is just my observation of it though, so fair you see it how you do.

I agree with you that she put her foot in her mouth about this, but these are complaints that I’ve seen spread throughout the entirety of this website. As a white girl though, she really shouldn’t of spoken on it. It honestly came off as a casual conversation that the journalist included (because the journalist has every right to do just that) and it’s coming off more as a criticism of an art form than a casual annoyance she has with a genre she likes...idk if that makes sense or not, but do you get what I mean :selena:

You're confusing art and artist here. And on Gagadaily no less... We all know Gaga used to present herself as dark. Do you put her in a box? Then why would you put billie in a box? A female artist can be more than just one thing. Singing about depression doesn't mean you can't sing about anything else (ex. Xanny, a touching anti-substance abuse song). And besides, I still don't see how that correlates to her not having the right to make a statement about lyrics like owning guns and ****ing bitches.

chaeri pls
