The fifth series of Netflix’s The Crown will be its last, its creator and writer, Peter Morgan, has revealed, as Imelda Staunton is confirmed to replace Olivia Colman as the Queen.

Fans of the critically acclaimed show, watched by more than 73m households worldwide, had hoped for a sixth series, which Morgan himself had originally planned. But, he said he believed it was time to stop.

Morgan said: “I’m absolutely thrilled to confirm Imelda Staunton as Her Majesty the Queen for the fifth and final season, taking The Crown into the 21st century. Imelda is an astonishing talent and will be a fantastic successor to Claire Foy and Olivia Colman.

“At the outset I had imagined The Crown running for six seasons but now that we have begun work on the stories for season five it has become clear to me that this is the perfect time and place to stop. I’m grateful to Netflix and Sony for supporting me in this decision.”

I don't whatch the crown but I always hated actor/actress changes

StarGate SG1 replaced an actress because the character at first wasn't planned to be reoccuring and when they changed their mind the actress wasn't up for staying long term

On top of that they looked nothing alike :triggered:

Would’ve enjoyed a bit of Meghan.

I get that ending (if they will) at the death of the Queen Mother and Princess Margaret makes sense, especially with the aftermath of Diana’s death. Maybe they feel like acting out the younger royals when they're very much relevant today doesn’t make sense.

well in the crown it makes sense because it's about different stages of life. Claire foy was the young queen, currently Olivia Coleman is like middle-aged queen and Imelda will be old queen. All of the actors are replaced because the characters are significantly older in the show

Although I completely agree with you, in this case the change was planned right from the start. They change the cast completely every two seasons, to somewhat give the impression of time moving forward. So i don't think that issue of changing actors applies here.
