FlopSlurper 34,336
she genuinely deserved them I would've loved for lover/ARUTW to win SOTY but oh well
Mister G 10,430
I don’t care for her music at all the way most do, but good job on her wins. Not many people can say they were 18 when they won their first Grammy.
Widows Kiss 7,818
The music industry is dying and the Grammys want to push the narrative that the industry can still spawn superstars.
HookerDotGov 542
Well, you have the big four categories expanded to eight nominees and each category obviously could have gone a different way with similar praises and criticisms. I’m not entirely surprised she swept them all, though the one I think she deserved least was Song of the Year. A lot of her competition in that category had some stellar songwriting and I believe Bad Guy is more impressive from a production standpoint (hence ROTY being more suitable). At the end of the day, she is young and fresh. She is successful without necessarily being too similar. As I said, it could’ve gone many ways and each would’ve been controversial in its own way. Lizzo would’ve swept as an established artist with 2 year old songs and plenty would’ve complained about that. Tanya Tucker is old and does country and young people don’t know who she is, so complaints about that. Lana would’ve been accused of doing the same schtick. And so on and so on. Wouldn’t read into this too much.

If you reply with "talent" then you should at least open the door for the possibility that Billie has done the same (Obviously it's a combination of both, but then don't throw Billie under the bus if you're stanning for someone who is still benefiting of the same treatment...) Gaga had the pipes, visuals and live teathrics to back that push up, Billie will fade soon. Gaga deserves everything she got and even more. giskardsb 12,565
Grammies have never been about what are the actual best lyrics of the year or what is the best produced song. If it was pop artists would rarely if ever win anything.
ShayCristoforo 10,607
I think she deserved Song Of The Year. But Old Town Road really did deserve Record Of The Year. It was THE record of 2019. period. And it's also so remarkable to see someone like Nas X succeeding within that type of sound. Get the pinot ready, because it's turtle time. The blending of country and rap was unique and the song was EVERYWHERE for half the year.

fishinmyhair 524
I think the Grammys love a "story". Young kid and her brother making this very successful album in their childhood bedroom, no other cowriters or producers... they love that stuff. They were also pretty good at their campaigning- features with Rollingstone, Howard Stern, etc. Remember that it's PEOPLE voting for who they WANT to see win. And it doesn't hurt that she's white, let's be real.
StrawberryBlond 14,872
The Grammys love pushing a new ingenue. Problem is, it can be the kiss of death for them when that happens. Their potential is there but it gets overblown, their follow-up isn't as praised and then they sink into obscurity. Not saying it will happen but this story is so overdone with the Grammys. You'd think they'd start to learn that it makes them look like fools years down the line and stop dumping a boatload on someone new in one night. Studying the biggest winners, it's clear that the route to long term success is to slowly gain awards over time, instead of a ton in a single night. Doot 2
I don't think the fact that an artist won the awards that you thought someone else deserved more means that there was an agenda. I think a group of people sat down in a room, voted for their choices, and they happened to majority be Billie.
Franch Toast 26,879
I don't know what the Grammy voters' "agenda" was, or that they even had one, but awards are inherently subjective unless you're simply basing them off of quantifiable metrics such as # of streams, # of units sold, etc. I have been a judge for prizes in a different arts field, and I saw first-hand just how subjective these things are– there is no objective way to say that one work of art is better than another. (Okay, obviously there are some standards, like in music, if someone is singing off-key, hitting wrong notes, etc......) Just because I prefer one style, and you prefer a different style, doesn't mean that my taste is better than yours or vice-versa. The Grammys are particularly non-transparent when it comes to voting metrics, so we don't quite know what the criteria are. It seems to be a mix of merit (but how do you qualify merit?) and popularity/records sold & streamed, but who really knows?..... This year in particular the shady voting practices were called out. Maybe they went with Billie because they're trying to prove that the Grammys are still relevant with a younger demographic. Maybe they went with Billie after being criticized a couple years ago for not giving awards to enough women. Maybe they simply thought she deserved those awards based on their nebulous criteria. Personally, I wasn't rooting for anyone in the general 4 categories, though I hoped LG might nab Song of the Year, but I wasn't surprised that she didn't when neither she nor her label promoted ARUTW. I'm not a Billie fan, but I'm not anti-Billie, either. Based on the little I've heard, I personally find her music interesting, and "Bad Guy" has grown on me. She and her brother have a compelling rise-to-fame story. If someone else would've swept the big 4, I would've been okay with that too. If the wealth would've been spread, that would've been great as well. At the end of the day, there really and truly are people out there who like Billie Eilish and her music, so maybe that's all it was. Maybe there's more to the story. (Honestly, be happy if your faves didn't win any of the big prizes, given the unsavoriness associated with the Grammys this year.) FentyGa 14,340
1.she’s extremely talented, particularly for her age 2.she was their best option. the only people truly in the running were ariana, billie and taylor. taylor didn’t show up, actively opposing the academy. not an option. probably would’ve won SOTY. ariana didn’t show up last year and said that grammys aren’t important to her. sure didn’t help her with votes.
