Because we don't all vote on the same day. Iowa and New Hampshire have historically predicted who goes onto get the nomination. The primary takes place one election at a time (some days there are several elections; one example of that is "super tuesday" where nearly a dozen states have elections on the same day). In other words, we are going to have 4 elections in the month of february (IA, NH, SC and NV) and then in March we start having a whole lot more (about a majority in fact). So, it's kind of a like a domino effect usually (i.e. one candidate wins the first contest and then go on to win the second and so on and so forth). The way the primary works is that every state is assigned a number of delegates. Those are called pledged delegates. In order to win the 2020 primary on the first ballot, you will need 1990 pledged delegates (3980 total pledged). If there is no candidate who has that many delegates on the first ballot, they will vote a second time at the convention. Then 771 superdelegates or party leaders to vote as well. At this point, someone will get a majority. We have primaries and we have caucuses. In a caucus state, the state will be divided into precincts where people will vote for their candidate by standing together with the other voters for that candidate. The will vote once. Then for the candidates who got less than 15% in the precinct, they will now be able to vote a second time and change to another candidate. In order to get any pledged delegates in a caucus you need 15% of support in each precinct. They then tally your support among the precincts to determine how many delegates you get. In a primary, people go to polling stations and vote and then they can leave. In primaries, you're still going to need 15% or more in order to get delegates. Example: The first caucus and first election is on February 3rd and it's the state of Iowa. It has 27 pledged delegates. So you can see this one election doesn't mean very much in terms of the math you need to win but it does mean a lot for the media coverage that follows. NH votes next and it has 24 delegates. NV/SC come soon after (36 and 54 delegates respectively). So the first month of the primary there are only 3% of the total pledged delegates up for grabs but these 4 states usually narrow the field down to just a few or less candidates. As for Bernie, he's pretty much in a statistical tie for the lead in Iowa. Is leading New Hampshire by 1.5 pts. He's about 5 points below Biden in Nevada (we haven't had much polling in this state but the recent polls show them tied actually).
