This seems morel Like him trying to keep the current system we have under the guise of “how are we gonna do this if not everyone can afford it gaga” because she also mentioned she wants help in every schools, this that and the other. I think Gaga’s basically saying that psychiatry needs to be more easily accessible with her statements.

Unfortunately accessibility goes far beyond being able to afford it... Here in Canada it can be tough too!

Phychologists generally is a private practice here but phychiatrists are covered by Universal care. Cost isn't the issue but it's still hard to access them just because of the demand

Mental health has exploded and 1 in 4 or 1 in 5 (estimates vary) have some degree of mental illness... You would need almost as many doctors be phychiatrists as general practitioners to meet this demand if every case was assigned to a phychiatrist (especially since its an issue that requires more follow ups than most types of health problems)

It might not be ideal for general practitioners to prescribe stuff or deal with mental health but his argument that there isn't enough to meet demand and that general practitioners handling milder cases before sending a referral to me is perfectly reasonable

What my family doctor did was sending me to an appointment with a specialist.

That’s great. I do agree a primary care doctor has no business treating psychiatric matters

Reading some comments on here and ones on his videos saying that that she's telling people to do what's working for her ... I just cannot stop laughing! Why I find it funny is because, I remember watching the video and she kept repeating that's she's talking from personnel experience and that it is what's working for her and her alone ... I was like "girl we get, no need to repeat that non stop" (even Oprah said the same thing!) ...  BUT APPARENTLY  :ladyhaha:

and she's also acknowledged that not everybody got the same resources as  her and is just trying to fight the stigma that's around mental health issues (for now...)

and to see that most of you apparently got that that same thing from the video... and this kind of thing happens to her all the freaking time too! this is incredible  :ladyhaha:

This 👆🏼. She did her part by articulating again and again that consulting a healthcare provider is a personal conversation, as everyone is different. Dr. Mike may be right about primary care physicians being qualified to treat depression, but that doesn’t discredit how candid, passionate, and vulnerable Gaga was during the interview. As far as this whole thing is concerned, Gaga wanted to lift the veil and remove the stigma about mental health and she did just that by generating conversation.

This.  Gaga made it clear she wasn't giving advice, just relating what works for her.

Painting Gaga's words in the worst possible light happens to her so often I'm surprised she gives any interviews at all, tbh.  She can't even talk about her personal experiences without people trying to make something else out of it.  But she tries to help people, in this case by removing the stigma about mental health.

I live outside the space time continuum.

I don't want to slight osteopathic physicians though! And that wasn't my original intention of even bringing up his credentials in the first place! There are great alternatives for those interested in seeking holistic medicine or physicians that target disease through a whole-body approach. It's just that this guy in particular (along with a lot of tv doctors and medical experts) tend to grossly overstep things and act as gurus for medicine in a way that exacerbates conflict of interest matters. I remember doing an ethics case in Masters program that discussed the paradigm of "celebrity doctors". It is important to be weary is all. There's a op-end about this in the Scientific American magazine if you're interested :https://blogs.scientificamerican.com/observations/beware-of-social-media-celebrity-doctors/

It's just...this entire thing is complicated and convoluted and has gone on so past the initial topic at hand and that wasn't my original intention  :air:

I am part of the working class. I have dealt with mental health problems since I was a little boy. My family too. It’s gotten worse and it has destroyed my life. I have not once been treated for my trauma, social anxiety and suicidal thoughts before because I can’t afford to get good treatment. However, the only option I have now is a primary care doctor. This is why Medicare for All is important to me and Gaga doesn’t understand that many of us simply don’t have access to healthcare. I know she’s a good person and she’s trying to help. But this is my concern with most celebs when they get involve in these issues. They don’t understand that simply talking or donating to charities is not enough. There must be structural change.

I hear what you're saying - but in her interview w Oprah, she was expressing her dissatisfaction with the current state of health care, and how everyone should be allowed a psychiatrist who can better prescribe. I don't think she was trying to polarize the entire crowd in front of Oprah so she didn't say it explicitly, but I'm sure she supports free health care for all.

She even talked about gathering all the top medical experts to solve the crisis and creating a mental health epicenter. She wants to put in the wok, not just talk about it or donate.
