Guest Posted January 12, 2020 Share Posted January 12, 2020 The prospect of footing the bill for the security of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, has not sent the whole of the Canadian population wild Canadians have reacted with fury at the prospect of being forced to pay millions of dollars a year in security expenses if Prince Harry and his wife Meghan move there. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex stunned the Queen and the rest of the royal family this week by saying they plan to spend much of their time in North America. While the pair have not said where across the Atlantic they planned to reside, many believe Canada is their preferred option. Their potential arrival has deeply divided the country. While some have said they don’t want the couple there, a recent poll by Dart and Maru/Blue found 60 per cent of Canadians said they would back The Duke becoming the country’s governor-general. The role acts as the Queen’s representative in Canada, Canada’s de facto head of state, and attracts a budget for life. Justin Trudeau’s government would also likely have a legal obligation to provide them with security because of their royal status, security experts said. “I don’t believe they can refuse the government of Canada’s security,” said Larry Busch, an ex-Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) officer who directed security for world leaders including U.S. presidents and the royal family. The cost could quickly run into the millions of dollars, said Mike Zimet, whose New York executive security firm has protected clients including U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders and actors Lin-Manuel Miranda and Alec Baldwin. California-born Meghan considered Toronto her home town after filming seven series of US legal drama Suits there. She has openly said Canada is her “second home” after Britain. The couple spent the last six weeks of 2019 in that nation, part of the British Commonwealth of countries that have the queen as their head of state. But news of the possible taxpayer bill has left many Canadians outraged. One, referring to the this week’s loss of a plane flying out of Iran, wrote on Twitter : “We lost 63 Canadians in a plane crash, but one of the stories being carried by the Trudeau Broadcasting Network is about two freeloaders wanting to come to Canada to further burden the taxpayers of this country. “Stay where you are, we don’t want you.” Hugh Grant from Toronto, Canada, wrote: “Canadian taxpayers must not finance this desire for ‘independence’ if the solution is life in Canada for Harry and Meghan. “The answer is NO.” Holly M, from Vancouver, British Columbia, where the royals spent Christmas, tweeted: “Canadian taxpayers could be on the hook for millions of dollars a year in security expenses if Britain’s Prince Harry and his wife Meghan move there, even part-time. “Which is, one of many reasons, why we don’t want them here!!.” Jeff Samsonow, from Edmonton, Alberta, added: “You just know Canadian taxpayers are going to have to cover the costs for these illegal immigrants.” Some even blasted the notion Harry could become governor-general. Doug Hill, of Toronto, voiced his anger. “The governor-general gets a salary for life. No way do I want to see Harry living off the Canadian taxpayer for the next multiple decades,” he tweeted. As Meghan flew back to Canada on Thursday to be reunited with their son Archie, her mother Doria Ragland was spotted out for the first time since spending Christmas with the royal couple on Vancouver Island. The 63-year-old stepped out from her Los Angeles home where she was seen walking her two dogs. Speculation has been rife the couple could make California their home. Monarchy is bullshit and I understand that they will require protection but if they're going to keep their house they may as well use royal money to pay for security, at least up until they're financially independent. Guest Posted January 12, 2020 Share Posted January 12, 2020 I'm all for them leaving the Royal family and it's clear that a lot of anti-Meghan rhetoric has mysogynistic and racist undertones (hell, overtones) but I don't think the average citizen should have to pay for their living costs.
