gabeoz 7,915
SO for yall Trekkies on here, CBS dropped the new short trek, 'Children of Mars', as a prequel of sorts to the upcoming Star Trek: Picard premiering on the 23rd of this month. Here is the trailer for the short trek below: (Spoilers for the short trek ahead) Spoiler The episode begins with two girls (presumably on Earth) each video chatting their own parents who, both happen to work their separate jobs on mars. One working as an anti-grav ringer, and the other working as a quality supervisor, both at the Utopia Planitia Shipyards (the Federation's primary shipyard orbiting mars during the TNG era). The trek follows the two girls during a day at school (first contact day to be exact), where they keep picking on each other before leading to a physical fight in the hallways, which the girls are broken up and the girls are sat back to back from each other as the (presumably Vulcan, but possibly Romulan) principal begins walking up to them to talk. But as he's walking, he stops in his footsteps as his communication device (and moments later, the floating holograms) change to a news broadcast of an attack on Mars. An admiral Picard comes onto the screen, calling the attack "devastating" and the news reel stating "Synths attack mars". The girls then hold hands despite their differences, to symbolize hope in the face of tragedy. Now there's several interesting parts and references in the short trek, beginning with the name, 'Children of Mars'. In ancient Mythology, the children of Mars are Romulus and Remus, which also happens to be the name of the homeworlds of the Romulan empire in Star Trek. And if you didnt know already, Star Trek: Picard takes place about 20 years after the events of the movie Nemesis, and one of the big plots that the show is shaped around is the destruction of the worlds of Romulus and Remus from the Hobus supernova. And this is referenced or alluded to during one of the scenes, where the girls are in a class room and the teacher is faintly heard talking about supernovas with a graph of stellar cartography in the background Now something else interesting to note is the attack on Mars itself, it's the same attack we've seen since the first Picard trailer dropped months ago. Considering we know that this is a major event that shapes the series, and from the Picard countdown prequel comics we know that Utopia Planitia is responsible for building the rescue armada that needs to transport up to 5 million refugees, how do you think this (including the information that the attack was carried out by synthetics) will tie in overall to the series and the destruction of of the Romulan homeworld? Personally I believe the attack by synthetics is related to the research of borg technology from the Romulan remnants as seen in the Picard show trailers. THe show itself is aimed at more mature audiences (13+ but primarily adults/young adults) as its a continuation of Star Trek: The Next Generation, taking place about 20 years after the last Star Trek movie (Star Trek: Nemesis).
