USA Accepts Lowest Level Of Immigration in Decades

The US added only 595,000 immigrants last year a decade low since the great recession and as a share of population is less than 0.2% which proportionally to its size is a multi-decade low

 

However the US is still expected to have respectable economic growth of 1.8% despite slower economic growth

 

Canada added 437,000 immigrants last year (some 1.2% of population) or 6X more immigration on a proportional basis. Ironically on the same continent one hits a record low while the other hits an all-time high in the same year

 

It's believed Trump's negative immigration rehetoric is making some reconsider whether to go into the US. Also economic improvements in Mexico has reduced attempted border crossings in the last several years including both legal and illegal immigration

Tbh. I love diversity so I'm loving this immigration rush in my Country at a rate that we haven't seen since 1990s despite the housing challanges

 

Ironically tho the US economy is still expected to grow a tad bit faster than Canada's (1.8% vs 1.6%)

 

It may have to do with worse workforce demographics (our retirement age is still 65 and hasn't been raised yet like many Countries including US) and in addition to that we've been having some productivity growth issues the last few years that economists are still trying to figure out why we're having and the US is not

 

That being said the US is running deficits of over 5% of GDP which energizes the economy and our deficit is only 1% so that may be part of the answer

 

Regardless the US is managing to grow its economy on a per capita basis and the economists are saying that Canada is only growing because of rapid population growth cuz business investment and productivity growth here have been seriously lagging the US in recent years and we'd be growing as slow as Europe without high immigration to fuel housing market, construction and service sector demand. And they are saying we gotta get per capita growth up again cuz population growth will only work as a growth engine for so long and won't grow our standard of living if productivity keeps dragging

 

Setting the xenophobia and immigration aside, the US must be doing something right that were not

Reminds me of Portugal... Unemployment is less than half what it was after Eurozone crisis and opportunities have increased but because life remains hard most will not say it improved especially if they are not one of the previously unemployed that now are

Where did you get this from? I thought the level wasn’t even raised to 350,000 yet?

It hasnt. 310,000 for last year's was still the target

 

But targets are just targets. The real number can be more or less with significant annual fluctuations

 

For example in 2015 we severely undershooted. Sometimes the opposite happens
