Luc 4,776
That's so sad. I visited many places in Iran. They have the most beautiful mosques and bazars in the world. Iranians are peaceful. Out of all the people I met, only one spouted government propaganda. The rest still had a trauma from the Iraq war early in the 80s (or was it early 90s?), where many lost at least one relative. I've even heard people who want a peaceful relation with Israel. And no, not just in northern Tehran, but across the country in both suburbs and cities. monster4life231 4,304
I haven't commented on GGD for a while, but felt the need after this. I'm a British person who was young during the Iraq War, so I can't remember it. I'm still learning about foreign policy and politics, so I don't know all the facts of the tensions between the USA and the Middle East, although this is what I think at the moment. Looking at wars in the Middle East, I find it ridiculous that countries like the USA and the UK, amongst others, believe that dropping bombs on other countries will somehow solve the complex issues which we face. I do not support Soleimani, but I don't think that killing him will somehow create stability, or improve relations with the USA. It was a dangerous attack which has increased international tensions, for what? Trump can argue that it was to protect Iran from Soleimani, but now Trump is threatening to target 52 cultural sites in Iran, which will effect the citizens of Iran and more thank likely kill innocent people. Threatening war crimes on twitter is the last thing they should be doing. Both sides should seek de-escalation. I also think that if the USA goes to war with Iran, the UK should not join. The wars we have fought in the Middle East have caused more destruction, chaos and more terrorism. Trump provoking Iran will cause more violence. I'm beginning to believe that this action and the threat of war crimes is to distract the USA from impeachment and the upcoming election. This speech by Tony Benn (a former UK MP) explains how I view this escalation situation. spread peace - #MJInnocent

Don't you see that this is how a war starts? The nature of war is escalatory. One side does something, the other side has to retaliate by doing something just a little bit worse, and so on, till you're in a full-scale, absolute war. You can only break this with negotiation, diplomacy, and making your countries interconnected. What Iran is doing in the region is the same as what the US has done in South-East Asia in the 60s and 70s, Latin America in the 70s and 80s, and the Middle East since the 90s. It's imperialism. If the US isn't going to stop doing that, why expect Iran to stop? So what should the US have done? Yes, retaliate. Maybe a cyber attack, for example. Something harmless that still hurts. Not something as escalatory as this.

Which is what Trump wants surely. Assassinating Soleimani was the radical option to retaliate against Iran for their attack 2 weeks ago, but he's a total idiot, and also wants to avoid talks of impeachment still, because as much as he is pretending to be okay with it, his ego is wounded, and as more evidence comes out that makes it necessary to request witnesses at the trial, he has an interest in anything to help avoid this. I honestly don't think he even cares about Iran at all. Donald trump only cares about donald trump

S0436 10,215
Iran have threatened to strike the White House? Isn’t that a cultural site? Both sides have made threats on numerous sites in the two countries. Was anyone expecting that striking a US embassy would lead to no retaliation from the US? I don’t believe Obama wouldn’t have retaliated, figures showed in 2016 alone that 26,171 bombs were dropped under his presidency.

Can you really be worse and more inhumane than Hitler? Apparently you can. Whoever advised him to tweet this is very dumb. This will turn countries against the U.S. DELETE!
