Centrist Democrats need a 2020 reality check before it's too late

Let's start the new year with a reality check. Remember that dad, uncle or neighbor, who told you over Christmas how much he dislikes Trump’s rude language and that he might vote for the Democrats, if only they nominate a “moderate” candidate and not a “socialist”?

Well, he is going to vote for Trump.

Democrats are not going to win over enough “moderate Republicans” to defeat Trump. Nor will suburban white mothers do the trick. The only way to win in 2020 is by mobilizing (potential) new voters and (recent) non-voters. Fortunately, there are more than enough of them. Almost half of Americans do not vote.

However, new voters and non-voters are disproportionately non-white and non-suburban. Many of them are not even registered, or – thanks to Republican purges of voting rolls – no longer registered. 

For the Republicans, the 2020 strategy is simple and straightforward: discourage or even disenfranchise minority voters, and mobilize white voters.

The 2020 elections will not be about changing minds about who to vote for but about whether to vote. The Democratic electorate the Republicans will “allow” to vote in November will not be enough to defeat Trump; Democrats must protect and expand their base before it’s too late.

So, basically, centrist Dems trying all they can to get "moderate" Republicans or to persuade Republicans to vote for them is never gonna happen. They hate Dems and won't vote for one regardless of who it is. 

Rather than wasting your time trying to get someone who will never vote for you, persuade people to just come and actually vote. By having policy proposals that excite them and make them want to vote.

That give them something to vote for not just what to vote against. That's the only way a Dem is going to win. Through high voter turnout where voters have something to vote for.

I never see republicans being moderate to get the Democratic vote. Trump got alot of the black and Latino vote not by being a centrist, he got it by being radical. Hes radical but atleast he "offered" something (even if we know it was all a lie).

That's the thing with a part of democrats voters, they convince themselves  they absolutely need a moderate to have large chances even after loosing using this strategy...

Meanwhile republicans chose WHO THEY WANT TO RUN THEIR COUNTRY and win doing that.

I don’t know many black and Latino people who voted for him personally but I do know some voted blindly thinking he had their best interests in mind. A lot of Hispanics that I know who voted for him are Cuban and that’s because Cubans here in the states tend to sway more Republican.

It's only a way to see things. The title could be : " Progressives? Are u tired of Trump? Dont forget to vote for Democrats, whoever the winner will be or else Trump will win again".

Trump did not get alot of votes from Black & Latinos, but hes the most Republican candidate in history to get alot of them.

Exactly!

When you try to please everyone by going in this moderate/centrist lane, you end up pleasing no one. The truth of the matter is that this country is more divided than ever; having a moderate run will not restore this country. You're either all in or all out.

If someone like Biden gets the nomination, Republicans wil not vote for him. I mean, come on, at this point even if Biden is more "electable", do you really think he's going to get even moderate Republicans vote? They're going to vote Trump, no matter what! A perfect example of this is my mother. My mother is very much a conservative person, but she doesn't exactly like Trump that much. That said, she's still voting for him in 2020 because he's a Republican. 

We need someone like a Bernie or a Warren in order to not only excite the Democratic base (and Bernie/Warren do excite the base, Bernie moreso than Warren though), but we also need someone who will bring fundamental and structural change. Bernie, imo, is the only candidate that is  really  going to do that.

I don't think it would work in America, but I don't think it's the absolute worst thing that could happen to America.

As for my understanding of socialism, I don't wanna go into the long ass definitions of it, so I'll just explain it as collectivism > individualism.

This is an opinion piece that ignores what happened just last year when just about 40 Democrats won in districts Trump had won two years prior. They were not liberal democrats; they were centrists. People like Cindy Axne, Abigail Spanberger, Jared Golden, and Collin Allred. Names most of you have never heard of because they aren't Twitter Popular. But they're the Majority Makers and they're why we now control the House of Representatives. They know what it takes to win in Trump districts because they've done it; The Guardian knows not. AOC knows not. You know not.

Poll after poll after poll - national and swing state (just last week in both Florida and Virginia) - have shown that Biden polls better against Trump than Sanders, Warren, or anyone else. Could that change? Of course. But this opinion piece ignores the actual facts and stats in exchange for their own baseless ideology.
