In the past a very high number of chemical plants, mining and metal processing was done right by the shores of the lakes. It was practice because loading large cargo ships was easier when plants were right next to shore

For many decades now regulations in both Canada & USA to protect the water no longer allow such activities but the soils on much of the shores remain poisoned nevertheless from the past activities

The record high water levels the past 6 years are forcing scientists to keep an eye on the amount of mercury as well as radioactive material and other poisons leeching into the lakes as higher water levels are bringing water further into shore which is causing these poisons in the soil to mix in with the water

Radioactive wastes from nuclear facilities still operating today on the shores are also a concern

For the moment the amounts are still too small to pose any threat to human health but scientists are monitoring the rise as 35 Million people rely on the great lakes for their drinking water

Gross. Lake Superior is a very special place for me so it sucks that once again people are too short sighted to realize that what they’re doing could be bad in the long run. Oh well! Nobody actually does anything about anything. Everybody just fake cries about it on social media :bye:

Well they have done stuff about it

These poisons on the land are fr the past. A lot of the activities that poisoned that land are no longer allowed so close to the shore

Unfortunately the past harm is done and now the higher levels are engolfing that poisoned soil

If it makes u feel better tho, lake superior I think has the least amount of pollution of any kind including poisons
