Man Says He Refused To Keep Dying Dad On Life Support Because "He Abused Me For Being Gay"

“Every time we see people dogging Dwayne Wade out for how he loves and supports his gay son we think of situations like this.  At some point, if you live long enough, and you are unable to take care of yourself, you become your children's responsibility.  We're not saying we agree with this person, we're just saying treat others how you want to be treated, including your children.

In a facebook post one man writes he took his father off life support after suffering years of homophobic abuse from his father despite his family's objections.  In the post he writes:

My entire family is mad I didn't keep my dad on life support, but I don't feel bad at all about it. From the time I was 8 to the time when his health began to fail, he abused me physically and emotionally for being gay. He kicked me out at 15 after I kept running away to escape his daily abuse. He had the opportunity to SUPPORT ME in LIFE and didn't. So when I was given the chance to keep him alive I didn't. I don't care who in the family don't like this, you all let him treat me horribly and turned the other way.”

If they were giving him a choice, it means that the dad was already dead & there was little to no chance of living without it anyway. It was inevitable.

I understand his reasoning, but I could never do this to any human being and I will never support this :madge: .

I fully support this. If you're given the choice to keep people on life support it means that their chances of survival are very low anyway. Like the article said, this man abused him and didn't give him any support in his life, so he didn't support him back. I'd do the same.

I don't really know what to think about this. I can fully understand where the son is coming from and why he did it, and the father sounds like a terrible person... but something still feels wrong about it.

I think I can only agree with taking someone off life support if if's done with the loving intention to end their pain. Doing it with malicious intent kind of resembles murder...

At the same time, I don't know what it's like to be physically and mentally abused by a parent and thrown out of my house for being gay, so I think given the choice a lot of people would probably have made the same decision as this man if they were in his shoes. It's easy to sit back and judge this as an outsider, but in reality I don't think any of us can say we wouldn't do the same unless we've experienced what he went through.

If he took his dad off life support because his chances of surviving were really low and resources were being wasted then thats understandable.

But the fact that he apparently did it just because his dad was not supportive of him just seems malicious.

take it this way: the son ended his father's suffering. plus, if the rest of the family's so mad about it why don't THEY fking pay for the hospital & medical bills?

Very good point. I really can't see many people forking out huge amounts of their own money to pay hospital bills for an abusive, horrible parent who was pretty much dead anyway by the sounds of it.

It's still morally dubious, but I can see how he came to the decision.
