Disney cuts same-sex kiss scene in Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker for Singapore market

SPOILER ALERT

SINGAPORE — Disney has cut a scene from Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker that depicts same-sex kissing for its screening in Singapore.

Responding to queries from Yahoo Lifestyle SEA, a spokesperson from the media regulatory agency, the Infocomm Media Development Authority, said in a statement today (20 December), “Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker has been rated PG13 for theatrical release in Singapore. The applicant has omitted a brief scene which under the Film Classification Guidelines would require a higher rating.”

The Rise Of Skywalker, the last film of the nine-episode Star Wars saga that has enthralled fans since 1977, was released globally this week and opened in Singapore cinemas yesterday (read our review here).

In the uncensored version of the film, two women are seen embracing and kissing in a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it scene featuring Resistance troops. In the cut version screened in Singapore, the two women embrace but are not seen kissing. The characters are played by unknown extras.

A PG13 rating means parental guidance is recommended for children below 13. The other age-specific ratings are NC16 (No Children Under 16), M18 (Mature 18) and R21 (Restricted 21).

Straights won again...

It's literally a blink-and-you'll-miss-it moment... Had I not heard about it beforehand, I'm not sure I would've caught it.

But who's surprised though? :interestinga:

Singapore lost. That part even screened in Indonesia and they are by far much more anàl to LGBTQ issues than SG.

Dude it happens for half a second in a shot that pans in another direction right away. It’s not much of a spoiler. If you’re worried about spoiling the movie for yourself, maybe don’t click on a Star Wars thread on a Gaga site? Seems like you asked for it :laughga:

Same in the UAE. A lot of same-sex relationships are increasingly being left untouched.

This is why LGBT+ representation in media MATTERS. A lot of people in the UAE are indifferent to LGBT issues but when they get to see relationships on-screen it adds much-needed exposure.

Like surprisingly there was zero negative reactions to the gay couple in It: Chapter Two. Maybe from the extremely homophobic people but so far not even my conservative Muslim friends said anything. They felt bad for the characters actually.

I remember in Singapore when I was watching the gay kissing in It 2 there was a collective groan within the theatre, including my parents...  :selena:

That kiss honestly is so insignificant that it doesn't make the film any better or worse. Disney likes to pander to LGBT, but not brave enough to make a film that features or contains LGBT stories. It's still all about the bottom line for that corporation.

That still wouldn’t be too out of place in a Star Wars movie...a whole ****ing galaxy of people and aliens and species and we’ve never seen two guy species kiss? Hmmm

Well as long as no one was angry I guess it's a good sign..? :messga:

But I always thought Singapore has a very vibrant gay scene?? Is it just legally there isn't much recognition or is it socially as well?

Everyone I've met from Singapore has been super progressive and it seemed like the norm to me there.
