Burning a MAGA hat doesn't spew hate against minorities.

ahh, come up with a better excuse than that please.

we were talking about hate crimes, not hate crimes against minorities only. so hate crimes against anyone else don't deserve that kind of punishment because they're not a minority.

there's a word for that, not gonna use it :awkney:

This might turn against the LGBT community.

But this is a hate crime against minorities. He wouldn't have received 16 years if it wasn't. :awkney:

would you say the same for someone who burns, for example, a MAGA hat? 16 years to him for hate crime?

MAGA and Trump supporters aren't protected classes/minority groups and therefore there's no such thing as a hate crime against them akin to LGBT people or African Americans who have had to deal with literally hundreds of years of violence, hate, and discrimination. Try again though  Xoxo

OT: This is great to set an example tbh. Not to mention he's a repeat offender and all those other crimes he did..

I think 5 years is enough. I mean, I would say less than that but he is a repeat offender. Maybe 5 years of community service working with a pro lgbt advocacy group would be more beneficial.

Setting aside what the right amount of time of punishment for a repeat offender is... I still don't get why in the 21st century we are still using jail as our main source of discipline. That's soooooooo outdated

Making ppl stuck in a tiny cell 22 or more hours a day only creates mental illness, instability and many ppl come out doing the exact same things

You'd think by now they would have come up with a better rehabilitation process

Prison might make sense for extreme dangers to societies (Serial killers, rapists etc) but for most other crimes I'm sure we can come up with something else

I don't get jail for drugs or tax fraud... Like what does a tiny crammed room have anything to do with it?

I'm not impressed by all the Little Strategists debating whether the sentence could "backfire" for the LGBT community. He set fire to someone else's property in order to intimidate a minority group. Not exactly a sympathetic figure. If our justice system sees him as enough of a threat to warrant being put away for that long, I won't be at the courthouse protests.

I really don't know if it's too much or not in this particular case since we don't have full details of how extensive his past was and severity of previous actions etc

But I find this attitude perplexing. Our justice system is supposed to be about justice so if it isn't fair we don't care?

There's a lot of crimes that are shameful or even worse than what he did like murder or rape

If we don't have to care about being fair with anyone that commits more than mild crimes than half of the people in jail could face an unfair sentence and we "don't care" :saladga:

You are absolutely right. Im just sick and tired of people spreading hate in this world and getting away with it. At least that'll scare off a lot of homophobes

I believe burning a flag should be legal. It's just a piece of cloth and nothing else. Sentencing someone to jail for burning a flag is just pure fascism. "Hate crime" is also an obscure term that can be used to silence those who disagree with you. If I burn US flag am I committing "hate crime" against Americans?

This guy just destroyed a flag, he didn't kill or beat anyone.
