LaLuna 12,732
Sadly the Senate will protect him. It's good that he's impeached, but it won't make up for all the wrong that he's done. He's probably only gonna get a slap on the wrist.

HorusRa2 5,005
Sadly the democrats chose the wrong way forward on impeachment. It will result in a failed senate trial and a rallying cry for Trump in the general election. Hope you all are happy with what the democratic party did for us. They may have single-handedly gave the election to Trump regardless of who the nominee is. Shameful.

That the Impeachment will not go through the Senate is less to blame on the democratic party but more so to the fact that the system behind the impeachment seems to be lackluster. To reach a 2/3 majority is impossible to achieve by more than 50% republicans beeing in the senate. Whatever may happen in the election, for Trump to be one of 3 Presidents in American history to be impeached by the HoR, may takes him off his high horse by saying he's the greatest of all and may wake up some Republicans from better not re-electing him. Sure. Let me address your other comment first. What my comments are saying is that the nature of the articles of impeachment are so partisan to where there is zero chance the republicans will yield. The fact that support for impeachment isn't overwhelming for ukraine tells us that there isn't any public pressure that can be utilized by democrats to put further pressure on republicans to step aside and let the leader of their party to be removed from office. The fact that Trump has launched illegal attacks on Syria as well as participating in a GENOCIDAL war in Yemen would have public support and would give democrats more leverage in this process. The fact that Pelosi and the democrats chose not to go through this more meaningful route to impeach show a lack of vision from the leaders of our party. Again, him being impeached by the house but not removed from office gives Trump an angle to campaign on to rally his supporters and deflect from the lies that he campaigned on that caused them to vote for him in the first place. This is why I believe it could cause the republicans to win the general election both at the top and at the bottom of the ballot. Trump will continue to use the failure of the democratic party to lie again to the people that he alone is the person that is best fit to make meaningful positive change in their lives. It will serve as a distraction from his tax cuts for the rich and ridiculous spending on the military. It will distract the conversation from having a meaningful conversation about criminal justice reform, climate change, and income inequality. I'm not saying impeachment is a bad idea but the route that was chosen to do so is not going to move the needle in a meaningful way for persuade Trump voters to vote for the democrat. In fact, by making Trump a martyr, it may energize the republican party more than the democratic nominee may be able to especially if we nominate people like Joe Biden who do not have energy in their campaigns in the PRIMARY. I'm the first person on here who would tell you that I hate Trump. I hate what he represents and I hate almost all of the things that he has implemented in his presidency. I strongly believe he is unfit to be president and that he has committed impeachable offenses but if we were going to stand a chance to impeach the mother ****er, we should have been more strategic in the way we did that. Trump asked Russia to help “find” Clinton’s emails during the election and his base didn’t give a **** about that, and they don’t care about the Ukraine stuff either. This will just galvanize their “they are out to get us” mentality. Combined with a weak democratic field and they may have handed the GOP the 2020 election. The House of Representivies has the sole power in our constitution to bring up & affirm articles of impeachment against Executive branch officials, including the president. Once it has reason to bring up articles, they must be voted on to officially "impeach" a president, that is to accuse him of mishandling the office or breaking public trust in some way. It is then sent to the Senate, where they perform a trial, where the deciding jurors are the 100 senators. You need 67 votes in the senate to convict Trump, which fully removes him from office and bars him from every running for election again. As far as changes to his presidency or powers, their are none, unless he is removed. He will be, however, stained by this in ways that we do not yet know. Only 2 presidents before today have ever been impeached, and neither of them were impeached before the election of a second term. It's extremely possible that this stain on his presidency will make it even more impossible for him to be re-elected, or it could boost him to be re-elected if he isn't convicted. It's a very scary time in America right now because at the end of the day, Trump is being impeached because he's trying to rig the 2020 election with support from foreign governments. If he isn't convicted for that conduct, he will very likely only be emboldened to do it all over again, this time in the open. His second term may be inevitable because Republicans are allowing our democracy to be torn to shreds, aka America is on very thin ice rn. Very informative. Thanks!
