I think even Boris realises that so many people voted Conservative purely to ensure that Brexit finally went through. You could tell when he said thanks to those who "lent" their votes to the Tories. If it hadn't been for Brexit, this result could've looked quite different, potentially. For anyone who's sad about the result, keep that in mind.

I'm in no way happy with the outcome, though I expected it. I didn't expect such an overwhelming rejection of Labour, however. I'm just hoping it doesn't result in another Indyref in Scotland because I wasn't here for it in 2014, even less here for it in this crazy time we're living in. I can't bear to think that the awful woman who cheered when Jo Swinson lost her seat is the person so many people want to be our leader and take Scotland into an independent future. She showed her true colours there and it wasn't pretty. I'm sick to the back teeth of all these politicians. None of them truly represent me.

Boris Johnson will turn the UK into a Little America and its sad. You cannot  trust what BJ or DT says... they are known liars! The UK has no hope honestly. Brexit is the worst (2nd worst thing after this) thing to happen to the UK and it will be financially worse off. The NHS is up for sale.

Financially worse off...lmao... The media’s scare-mongering propaganda really is getting to you. Do you see how much we pay in to the EU, hun? RESEARCH. Just have some ****ing faith in your country. A country that has always been great. We take what we have for granted too much and we’ve had it so perfect all our lives that we start to forget how much better off we are still. Do you really think Boris will sell completely the NHS after being in the media saying it won’t be up sale no matter what? Do you really **** he’d shoot himself like that? It won't pass through parliament. It would tarnish the Tory’s reputation forever if that happened, literal political suicide - it’s the UK’s most precious creation. He can try pushing through anything he wants but he won’t sell the NHS. It’s the dumbest idea. America is 10x worse than the UK in many ways, and I don’t just mean politics. Small parts of the NHS have been privatised since Labour but it will never be sold off completely. Privatisation offers more patient choice, different treatments, drugs. Trade deals never mean publicly funded healthcare systems are up for sale - see Australia’s trade deal with the US. The scare-mongering by the remainers, media and Labour voters needs to stop.

If you truly deep down in your heart believe Boris Johnson and that he is telling the truth, then be my guest. I can't argue with someone who has fallen for his lies.  Only time will tell, but I can assure you, the NHS will be sold. Bookmark me. I am that confident. He already repeated the "50,000 more nurses" lie in is winning speech...  but  you do you.

This is not my country, my country rejected the Tory mentality + voted to remain in the EU.  We may pay a lot for EU memberships, but we reap a lot of the benefits from that and we do see a good return. There might be some negatives, but the positives OUTWEIGH the negatives. I dont know why you would want to come out of one of the biggest markets in the World. Also, it is near on impossible to set up a trade deal within a year... it took Canada 7 years.

The Tory reputation was tarnished after Maggie Thatcher DESTROYED Scotland and all the mining communities in England and Wales. She was a cold and heartless b****.  And this is the most right wing Tory government since THEN. The tories won not because they are an amazing party, but because "lets get Brexit done" attitude which so many of England want.

As I said, if you truly believe BJ is telling the truth then I can't agrue with that. You'll find out soon enough

"Falling for his lies", "you'll find out soon enough" HOW ARE YOU SO SURE!? You cute af, but you act like you can read his mind and what he's about to do. I understand where you're coming from, I'm centralist, but you're acting like your political opinion is above mine and literally act like I'm going to be proven wrong. I'm here being non-biased, optimistic, reasonable and have done my goddamn research on both sides of the argument. I'm not sat here listening to scare-mongering, rumours and guesses by stupid papers in the media. I still stand by what I said. Who knows, maybe I'll be wrong. Maybe, probably, whatever. But it ain't being sold, that's political suicide and you have been scared by the media and Corbyn's lies. Do you really truly believe the UK will cease free healthcare!? 😂 There's no stone-cold proof it's going to be sold. If you can find some actual evidence that are not Corbyn's ambiguous leaks, then I'd believe you. There are loads of countries not in the EU that do just fine. Canada. Norway. Australia. New Zealand. All have free healthcare and border control. Scotland definitely deserves to remain the EU, but you're on this site comparing NHS Scotland with NHS England and I'm like... England has 10x the population, thus more demand. The two cannot be compared. But yeah, it could be better. I don't know much about Thatcher tbh. I mean, she seems incredibly disliked (especially by the mining communities), highly controversial, but I know for a fact she was a grounded leader and not everything she did was bad. She proved a lot of people wrong and changed the perceptions of what women could do & achieve. Can't say I like her at all though. If the Tories reputation is so tarnished, they wouldn't have won.

The best thing Maggie T did was join the European Union.... its the only thing she did.  As I said, the Tories won because they went out on a campaign that was "only us can guarantee Brexit, lets get it done". They borrowed voted from Labour who didn't like Corbyn. Most of the mining communities voted Tory because Corbyn never clarified his position on Brexit and many people who wanted to vote Labour felt they couldn't vote for Labour while he was leader. Its not because the Tory reputation is amazing and they are the best party. Labour got it massively wrong and paid the price for it.

You'll see in Scotland that the Tories lost, and so did Labour. We rejected the Westminster rhetoric, and we elected 80% of the seats available in Scotland to the SNP.

I don't think my political opinion is above yours, we are all entitled to one.  But I just cannot fathom why you would put your trust in someone like Boris Johnson who lies with almost everything that comes out his mouth. To think that the NHS might be up for sale and you might have to pay for your health care may seem farfetched after we have had it for so long. But it is something that its scarily real thought to have. Donald Trump said that "everything is on the table" when talking about trade deals. Boris Johnson can say what he likes on TV, but behind closed doors best believe everything is on the table.  If you believe those papers were just "scaremongering" then fine. I think those papers were true, and we have Donald's word that he wants the NHS.But this doesn't just stop at the NHS. Boris Johnson can rip up workers rights and change them to suit the Tories, they already want to make you work until you are 75.

Well my point is that if the Tories truly cared abour the NHS, it would be doing much better.

Right now I am optimistic and hopeful about Scotlands future. There is so much that can happen and this election proved (again) how much we want to remain in the EU. On the back of this election, with the prospect of having another 5 years of a Tory government which is very right wing is very damaging to Scotland and it is clear that we do not want to go down that path. I can see Scotland become an independent country really soon. In terms of England or the rest of the UK, I don't see how it can survive this next decade. I really think Boris Johnson and his right wing Tory government ONTOP of Breixt will drive the UK off a cliff edge and will sink the whole Union.

We’ll see if your dramatics come in to play. Donald also said he would never touch it. The man goes back on his word all the time, couldn’t give a crap what he says, of all people 😂 Boris has continually said it is not on the table, so maybe listen to that instead of trying to believe what you want to believe, yanno? Or what the papers want you to believe. Rip up workers rights??? Oh my god, okay, I’m out

Well I wouldn't trust the tories as far as I could throw them, but good luck to you in England cause you seem to think Boris is a man of his word. So we'll see. One thing is for sure, Scottish independence is definitely on the cards and I hope we vote to leave this sinking ship before it gets bad

You called me cute, and I dont want to fight anymore cause you are also cute :vegas:

Just reflecting on some of this thread...

Interesting how many think Boris won solely on his Brexit promise.

It was actually the weakness of Jeremy Corbyn that led to such a shift in voting habits:

"46 per cent cited Jeremy Corbyn as a reason (for not voting Labour), compared to just 19 per cent who said it was about Brexit."

And that weakness isn't solely attributed to Brexit, either. It's more about his extreme leftist ideals, his dislike of capitalism and his ambiguous (or, to some, dubious) foreign policy.

The truth is: Margaret Thatcher (love her, hate her) forever won the argument of Capitalism VS. Socialism in the UK.

Jeremy Corbyn turned back the dial, and instead of focusing on making capitalism actually work 'for the many', he put forward a manifesto that - at least partially - tried to overturn it.

And that's why he lost so significantly.

In the UK, the party of capitalism will always win because it's proven to 'work' on a relative basis.

It's the status-quo - it's safe, it's trusted.

Spoiler

And on that point: that's why the Democrats and the Republicans are virtually the same party in the US. Different veneers, but the same economically.

Political revolutions  always fail.

And whilst Corbyn's policies were not half as extreme as the media presented them to be, they were - again, on a relative basis - a 'revolution' that a post-Thatcher UK could (and should) never get behind.

To win an election, then, the Labour party needs to accept that the days of socialism are over.

Business and industry is good for the UK. It's how this tiny island has become such a global force in spite of its size.

Labour, in my opinion, should now focus on  exposing the weaknesses of our current system, and offer credible solutions that work towards fixing them.

Tony Blair (again: love him, or hate him) got it right on that front.

And that's why he's the most successful Labour leader in history (three election wins!), and the last one to actually get the keys to No. 10.

So yes: Brexit did influence this election.

But even without it, Boris would've still won a landslide.

It's time for a modern, progressive and serious Labour party that is trusted by the working people it's supposed to represent - not the loud minority of liberal elites who have led this once pragmatic party to partisan-blindness and historical defeat.

But before a new dawn rises on the left of British politics, I'm excited to be in an era of majority government that can put forwards an agenda and actually see it through.

And whilst I might not always like the direction of Boris Johnson, stability is always better than being led by a powerless Prime Minster who's hands are tied by a divided parliament.

I agree with most of what you said. Brexit played a huge part in the election and its wasn't just Corbyn. People in England who voted to leave the European Union were faced with three options; The Tories who would carry through what they wanted, the Labour party who stayed neutral and were going to have another referendum on the question, and the Lib Dems who were going to revoke it altogether. There was only one party who could deliver what the English people want, and that was the Tories.

It is like what I said earlier. England (as a whole) has historically been a Tory country, one that sits centre-right to right of politics. If Labour want to win elections, they need to change so that they are more centre than left in order to appeal to those in England.  Socialism does not work in England, but going more centre you can give a watered down version. Its sad that socialism doesn't work in England, but that's just them. Its why they are so against devolution.

The reason why I am singling out England is because it is completely different to Scotland and it always has been. Socialism works in Scotland. The SNP are a socialist party, but before their rise to power, it was a labour/SNP split.

If we look at the election results interms of Brexit, the UK union and the different types of politics, it became even more clearer that the UK is (and will never be) equal or united.  In England, it voted to leave the European Union. In Scotland, it voted to remain in the European Union. Boris Johnson has a mandate to take England out of Europe, but he has no mandate to take Scotland out. Scotland proved that it is much more of a socialist and progressive country than England, were as England reverted back the the right wing politics. Scotland became united in terms of wanting to remain in th EU, independence from the UK, and wanting a much more progressive future. England became a "one nation" conservationism country and is the most right wing Tory government since Thatcher, and it clearly wants to leave the EU. But the UK as a whole is not united, and it will never be united. And now in N.Ireland you have less Unionist parties than nationalist.

It is going to be a very interesting start to 2020, and even this week. I see a huge shift here in Scotland; I have seen many labour activists and senior figures and now coming out in support of independence. I'm not saying that independence is 100% going to win, but with most of Labour on board, PLUS EU nationals  + 16/17 year olds, it puts Scottish independence at a very good position to win.

It is very clear that the UK is on a different path to Scotland.

So for those saying "aw lets trust Boris Johnson because he cares about the NHS"  well that aged like milk. The next 5 years will be... something
