Rape accused priest starts his own nation

Abuse, assault, rape, embezzlement – the list of allegations against self-styled Godman Nithyananda is getting longer. However, that has not stopped the man from establishing his own country. Yes, you read that right.

He has bought a private island, named ‘Kailaasa.’ He has declared the island a Hindu sovereign nation and has already designed a flag, a passport and an emblem for it. The exact location of the island is still unknown, but a few sources say it might be near Ecuador.

All information isn’t derived from sources but is publicly available on Kailaasa’s official website – which even has a Constitution for the new ‘nation’

Here’s the official website -

Is this the wildest thing I’ve ready today? Im- :air:

Cause if it was a thing, billionaires just could do whatever the **** they want (not like they don’t now but you know what I mean), just buy land, make it a country and you have sovereignty :awkney:

anyone can declare their own country as long as they follow the requirements of the Montevideo Convention.

The only problem is that the UN won't recognize you, and in most cases these self-declared countries have little to sometimes not even a single citizen (in the case of micronations). In other cases, there's entire regions of what most people in the world assume are part of another country, that operate as their own independent country, with thousands of citizens, a legit government and army, yet not a single UN member recognizes them so no one acknowledges that they exist. Some places that come to mind are Abkhazia, Transnistria, Western Sahara and Somaliland.

It's actually a super interesting topic that I find myself down rabbit holes about frequently :vegas:

Not sure it would serve any purpose.... U can't really do business in a tiny island and if u did something terrible and got sanctioned or accounts frozen and couldn't do anything on outside world ud be stuck living in a tiny island :emma:

Like I'm not sure it would make them be do anything they can't already do anyway but I also don't think it would protect them either if they went way too far even for a billionaire and the justice system went after them
