My guess is that she signed up because

1) she didn't know initially

2) she did know, and now she can make a statement that is both beneficial to the cause she is standing for, and for her image (slightly cynical take)

Honestly, good on her. I don't know if it well end up successful at all, but it's nice to hear a bigger name comment on the Salvation Army, which I don't really see happening often.
