Babel 41,429
She’s just wishful thinking there was more variety, like most of y’all wishes your indie fave was more popular.

They have no variety and just focus on pop/rap music. Spotify is one of the reasons this has happened, if they varied there playlists and stopped accepting checks from labels to push people like Ed, it would be better. Yes, there are a few major playlists that you need some checks sent in order to be on, but you're just a click away from genre playlists - https://open.spotify.com/browse/genres. It's not Spotify's fault the general public chooses Rap Caviar and New Music Friday instead of the "Punk" and "Country" playlists.

Guest
I very much agree with what she's saying and I think that the keyword here is freedom. Radio can be and historically has been very limiting and restrictive and straight up gate-keeping. It's not about whether or not you enjoy a certain genre or a certain artist, but the fact that you're capable of being exposed to different things in the first place. So many artists are deprived from exposure simply because they're not trend chasing and that has to end. There's so much music out there to be explored from different places and with different sounds and it's important to cultivate an environment where people can willingly veer into those territories. Streaming as a mainstream means of music consumption is still fairly new, so while yes experimentation is more accessible than it has ever been people's mentality still hasn't completely shifted. Not to mention that your average person can't really be called an avid music fan, but a mere casual listener so of course they'll just tune in to Spotify's top 100 or whatever. The point is to allow a bigger array of artists and art to become popular without having the industry be chained to a certain sound or aesthetic and no matter what you listen to there's simply no reason to object to that. She wants rock and roll, country, punk etc to be able to be heard by everyone. Except that not everyone wanna hear those. Those genres already had their prime time and the industry shifted to something else, like it always did and always will do. She comes across very naive and pretentious. How is wishing people had more options when it comes to music being naive and pretentious? Not everyone wants to hear those? Yeah, and not everyone wants to hear the same Chainsmokers inspired pop song for the nth time. Variety isn't a bad thing, accessibility isn't a bad thing. Not a single soul loses if they get exposed to different genres and sounds. You don't like it? Great, go explore something else. Exploration enriches your life and makes living more beautiful and complex. It's not about forcing anyone to listen to anything but having the freedom to be exposed to more. Restricting ourselves doesn't take us anywhere new.

Lord Temptation 11,209
She’s saying that there should be genre diversity within the radio station, not just diversity across different radio stations. And quite frankly she’s right. A station that only plays one type of music is a monoculture, which is precisely how people learn to be ignorant. They stay in a bubble. And that is not healthy. theahsfan 13,822
Why doesn't she try and campaign to change things then? Like how Nicki Minaj helped streaming count more to the BBH100 chart or whatever
