They invested a quarter of a billion on Face ID and to bring back Touch ID would be admitting they were wrong (and wasted a lot of money). IMO its about as likely as them bringing back the aux jack. Just as options. The patent for this have been known since at least a month after Face ID were initially launched. And not long after, all these Chinese Android phone have race on their own to beat Apple on this. But what they did now is completely different technology that Apple want to do. But seems they finally can make it happen in 2020, where the new cycle of iPhone design will restarted again. The Headphone jack thing will never return though.
