Candy Gaga 5,374
Improved : 1. Poker Face : Proved she's not a 1 hit wonder and is one of the most creative bangers ever in the Dance-Pop genre that enlarged her fanbase. 2. Paparazzi : Alongside the VMA's performance , showed the GP that she's capable of creating other than dance floor bangers but also songs with serious issues. 3. Bad Romance : Revived the Pop scene and if Poker Face did so with it's Electro/Euro Dance style , Bad Romance did it introducing the Dark/Synth pop genre to mainstream charts. 4. Born This Way : An introduction to one of the best albums of the century showing how she's woke , independent and ally to the LGBT community. She did that back in 2011 when everyone was scared of backing the LGBT and race issues fearing for their image. 5. Million Reasons : Perfect song that aided her career a lot after ARTPOP and Perfect Illusion underperformed. The best choice and the only one that could've went huge with the Super Bowl. 6. Shallow : Alongside the ASIB era and it's album , put her #1 everywhere on the charts and became her repeak and biggest success since 2011. Wasted : 1. Applause : A great song that could've been bigger if released as the final single from the album to end the era with APPLAUSE. People were waiting for her comeback after BTW so some song with BTW DNA like MJH or Aura would've worked better as a lead. 2. Judas : Would've been better if it was released as the final single. TEOG would've been a better follow up since It's a huge single to follow BTW when the media had their eyes on her. 3. Perfect Illusion : Great Pop-Rock smash but not single material specially at the year of Trap/Ballads peaking songs. 4. Joanne : Promo single for fans as a gift to end a unique and personal era would've been better than being send to some European radios as a single. It was not necessary. 5. G.U.Y : Best song on the album could've worked better if the era didn't have the controversies surrounding the album, Applause and DWYW. But after a messy era a more stripped down song like Dope could've worked better than G.U.Y
FfFfFfFF 56,021
As most already noticed, the lists are correct except for Applause. It's one of her biggest hit and the biggest hit on ARTPOP. Of course it performed worse than her previous leads but it wasn't the song's fault, really. People were moving out from her after BTW but responded well to Applause regardless. Chart-wise it was ARTPOP's saving grace.

The song received all the promo possible, including the SB which is arguably the biggest promo slot on earth, and it still only managed #4 for a week (I won't even mention its international chart positions). By the time MR became a "hit" (it really wasn't but we'll go with it), she had already cleaned up her image with C2C, Sound of Music, National Anthem and then the iconic halftime show. So it's not as if MR did anything to clean her image or change her reputation. I see MR as a solid "kept things moving" kind of piece in her career. It was a moderate, but important, part of her post-2014 re-brand. Joanne, while generally seen as an overall positive note from the public, didn't really have anything to stick with them until Gaga used it as the "show-stopper" for the SBHTS. I agree in that it didn't do anything drastic that 2014-2016 already did, but it helped cement something from Joanne with (at least) a good portion of the American public. It wasn't a mega-hit, but non-fans that I know definitely remember at least something from that song. It also helps that the high peak added another notch to her belt of successes, even though I think it's moderate-but-stable chart positions helped solidify itself within the public sphere more. 3 points in and ready for more

Maybe it was the less-wasting single, but it wasted her carreer as well. People were so disappointed, they expected much more from it (also critics didn't appreciate it). G.U.Y. is not even a single, come on, she never promoted it. Still a single. it was sent to radio and got a music video. I hate when Gaga fans act like singles that weren't strong performers weren't singles.

I guess you're right about it being another notch in her belt - it's always good for promo for her label to be able to say she has "X top 10 hits". And if you're from the US you'll know much better than me the actual impact it had there. But honestly here in Europe, before ASIB the last time I heard anyone talk about her was AHS. Joanne just didn't happen here... and so from a European perspective MR did nothing either positive or negative for her career. Also, and this is obviously totally hypothetical, but I really think ANY new song she performed at the SBHS would have gone top 10 - I think the fact that MR only went top 10 for a week despite being performed on every single major platform shows that it just didn't resonate much with the public... (but honestly I really hate acoustic love ballads so I'm probably just biased against the song)
