Disney Marvel Does Not Include Robert Downey Jr For Oscars Consideration

A couple of weeks ago, Disney launched the official awards push for Avengers: Endgame when the movie was listed on the studio’s ‘For Your Consideration’ page on their website alongside Toy Story 4, Aladdin, The Lion King and Frozen 2. Now, the list of awards that the culmination of the Infinity Saga has been competing for has been revealed, and in what will be a blow to many fans, there’s no place for Robert Downey Jr.’s final farewell as Tony Stark.

Unsurprisingly, Endgame is being heavily pushed in the technical categories with the movie being put up for consideration for Best Editing, Production Design, Costume Design, Makeup & Hairstyling, Sound Mixing, Sound Editing and Visual Effects, where it stands a good chance of picking up a couple of wins. However, in terms of what you would call the ‘big’ awards, the twenty-second entry in the Marvel Cinematic Universe is only hoping to compete for Best Picture, Director, Adapted Screenplay, Cinematography and Original Score.

It seems unlikely that Endgame will be in the conversation when it comes to the major categories, but it will come as a disappointment to many that Downey Jr.’s performance wasn’t even on the shortlist, including directors Joe and Anthony Russo, who felt that Iron Man’s last appearance in the MCU was awards-worthy.

I mean, he wasn’t even going to get shortlisted as a nominee by the Academy anyways. I’m glad the RDJ show is over tbh

It was never going to happen. Plus he would've easily been forgotten due to the other lead contenders: Phoenix, Hanks, etc.

I would love if Avengers could get a Best Picture nom though. If Black Panther can..

Avengers was never happening outside some tech categories like VFX and sound, and the acting categories are STACKED this year. I don't think any Walt Disney Studios (not including Fox Searchlight) film this year should be considered for Best Picture. However, I find it surprising that Disney is not AT LEAST campaigning for RDJ.

Sorry but he doesn’t deserve it. Watch some serious movies that send great messages and you’ll see what is great acting. Only “comic” movie that deserves nomination for best actor this year is “Joker”.

Lowkey agree. I love the MCU to death but I've never been a fan of the RDJ train. He's a great actor, and an incredible Tony Stark/Iron Man, but the MCU is not dependent and it shouldn't be dependent (going forward) on RDJ.

OT: I'm very surprised by this. Hopefully it will get nominated in other categories though. While I liked Black Panther, honestly, I think it's a bit overrated. If Black Panther can get a Best Picture nomination, then Endgame deserves it 10x.

On the bright side, I think this will be a shoo-in for Joaquin Phoenix to get Best Actor. I haven't seen the movie (will be this Saturday!), but I've heard many people say that they believe he deserves a nomination.  If RDJ is out of the picture, then this increases Phoenix's odds of getting that nomination (I don't believe the Academy would have had both RDJ and Phoenix for Best Actor).

I'm sorry, but I'm tired of this rhetoric that comic book movies aren't "real movies". They're just as "real" as any other genre or any other film.

I didn’t say they are not real movies I just said that Avengers are not that good. There are plenty of comic movies that deserve Oscar nominations for best actor but this one is not it.

I love the MCU, but Iron Man has always been my least favorite hero. RDJ is great as Tony however I don’t think anyone is deserving of a best acting nom. 
 

I can see Endgame getting some VFX nominations/wins.
