It's more like a pop subgenre/ exaggerated description of style. If it's not a genre then we might as well say PC music is not a genre either because of how much resembles dance-pop. Honestly I don't understand why people get defensive for genres, either in favor or against their existence. :poot:

PC music isn’t a genre and has never been known as a genre it’s a collective/independent label of mostly British artists including SOPHIE, Hannah Diamond and more.

Fake edgy gays just started using it as a genre name online after finding out about SOPHIE after Charli worked with her on Vroom Vroom, when those of us who’ve been fans know it’s literally just a label/collective name not the genre. They’re aware their genre is electropop. Sorry for the rant lol 💀😂

Gaga fans are forever adding little random labels of genres to her songs when they don’t correlate so it doesn’t surprise me anymore

It's a name people mutually use to describe a certain type of music, has names of artists attached to it, it has certain characteristics that can be easily identifiable so at this point is either a genre or on the way to become one. The need people have to clarify whenever this discussion occurs shows this.

There are lots of different genres that aren't much different to usual pop but still exist, like indie pop for example.

well then people need to research in 2019 then because if you google PC Music it literally comes up with the collective/label not a genre and their genres are described as electronic, bubblegum dance music and experimental. It takes 5 seconds.

Also indie pop isn’t actually related to “Pop” in the sense that we know it. It’s actually more akin to Alternative Rock just it possesses a more acoustic production and is often independently produced and distributed. It’s only called that because it’s Independantly made and distributed (Indie) and is a lighter form of rock so it’s likened to (Pop).

And I’m not saying this to sound smart just an FYI, it just irks me that Gaga fans are very precious about Gaga’s music and try to give her sound deeper meanings when it actuality she does Pop-Rock, Electropop and Dance. And that’s pretty much it.

Some artists played an already-existing type of music and added lyrical themes  and an instrument that weren't usual for this music genre and it was enough for them to be deemed "the pioneer of this new music genre that is...".

So why not seing dark pop as a genre then? I don't really see it as a music genre myself but it has as many distinctive criteria as a lot of so-called "music genres" so you know...

So do you think Gaga only does 3 genres? She uses inspirations and influences from so many genres, did disco, country-pop, jazz. To say she only does dance, rock and pop is pretty weird especially for a Gaga fan and also to assume people say this to be precious maybe it's untrue?

PC music is genre more and more people use to refer to a genre to it's becoming one. It might not be in any official lists or whatever but the list or the people decide when a genre exists? When house or metal started don't you think they started the same, with people casually using to describe a sound while not being fully different to something that was already there and then progressed more and more into its own  thing? Again, I don't get why people get so defensive about genres when they are fluid, ever-evolving, fluctuating and can be easily mixed.

Of course it's not! :ladyhaha: We call some of Gaga's songs "dark pop" because of the lyrics, music, vibe, etc. Not because it's an actual genre. C'mon!

Exactly and OP knows that but is just tryna hop on some wanna be edgy pretentious vibe :lana:

Pop is a "mother genre"

and if you want to be technical, Pop = Popular which can be so many things is better to call it dance or synth music

Dreampop, Darkpop, ARTPOP, Synthpop... are genres contained inside of "Pop"

yes Darkpop sounds like a generic thing made up to sound edgy but it is not, it has shared characteristics; a very grandiose (but smooth) percussion, an experimental approach to synths and melodies, most of the songs are played in minor with a big dissonance in the last note of the chorus, and it features spoken word parts. it may or may not talk about dark subjects, that's up to the artist...

this is darkpop (and also downtempo - trip hop)

but no, just using dark imagery on a music video or album art doesn't make it darkpop, i wouldn't classify the fame monster as it, if anything just Monster for the intentionally  out of sync "he ate my heart" part

It’s a lazy way of saying that Gaga doesn’t make the kind of music you like anymore lol “we want dark pop Gaga” is just what they’re so used to typing that they don’t see how silly they look
