13 Reasons Why - Season 3

So let's use this thread to discuss season 3 of this show.

I'm at episode 9 and here's what I think so far:

Spoilers ahead!

Spoiler

Ok,

I absolutely LOVED season1. It touched me in a way that only few series have done so far. I thought season 2 was nice too. I was one of its defenders actually. I mean I get why it received criticism, and I admit that it was not as good as the first season. But it was hella exciting. After every episode, I wanted to watch the next one. It was extremely addictive and even though I didn't think it was a particularly good season from a technical point of view, I enjoyed it very much.

Now season 3 is just.... I don't like it at all.

First of all: I HATE that new girl. Why do we need her? Her entire character is like such a cliché. It's like, we've had this same girl, the same personality in a million other series and movies. She doesn't really add anything exciting to the show. And I think it's kind of embarrassing how she starts every episode with a cringey monologue and the writers of the show probably thought they were Shakespeare.

Also, why do Anni and Clay feel like they need to investigate the murder case in the first place? Like, why can't they just let the police do their job? Maybe it will make sense once I know who the killer is, but as of now it doesn't make any sense that they decided to become detectives and interrogate all their friends. It's a cheap plot device to advance the story.

Next, they spent the entire first two seasons to make us believe that Bryce is a goddamn monster and now we are supposed to feel sorry for him? I HATE when they add details to such strong characters and suddenly they are completely different. Same goes with Monty. I mean I gagged when I found out he was gay (?), but like... it doesn't feel like an organic character development. Also, he went to that party with Bryce, ends up with a random boy in a room who happens to be gay too and suddenly they kiss? How realistic is that?

Another point that irks me is that there are so many things that matter in one episode and the next episode they don't even talk about it anymore. I get it, 13RW has always tried to talk about issues that are controversial and aren't really talked about that much in depth. But it feels like with this season they tried to talk about EVERYTHING that came to their minds without building a logical story around it. I mean we have: abortion, deportation, masturbation, mass shootings, suicide, etc. etc. Like, teenage abortion for example is an important issue that deserves attention, but it mattered in only one episode and now nobody cares anymore.

I mean I am going to watch it til the end, but I don't really care. Like, during the episodes there are moments when I don't really pay attention and when the episode is over I don't feel like "OMG I need to know what happens next!!!".

Hopefully the last few episodes will be better.

What do you think?

REALITY

I finished the season, and honestly, I think it's the best one out of the three. I don't really understand why so many people hate Ani though  I love her

I just finished the season and I agree is the best one yet. The character development was beyond fantastic, mostly Tyler, Jessica and Bryce. The acting was very good as well. The narrative was confusing at the beginning with the whole late past-early past-present thing, since this time we didn't have Clay's injure to guide us, but once you get the timing it becomes easy.

Ari was an interesting character and I got a friend like her, who thinks she's always five steps ahead of everyone and believing she is makes her feel safer. But, like very character, she really shows that there isn't just black and white, and even the best people can do messy things.

And the spoiler part:

Spoiler

First, this season has some of the best and most impactful scenes of the show, like Tyler telling Clay about his rape at the bathroom, the survivors standing up at Jessica's speech and Chloe's abortion. I felt every second of those scenes.

Justin and Clay duo scenes were good to watch, sometimes funny, sometimes messy and sometimes emotional, which brotherhood is all about.

I like the way they presented Bryce's redemption. It's true that he is a rapist, but he had some good in him, and I know y'all are probably going to come for me on this one, but I felt sorry for him many times. Again, he was a rapist, but I feel like he became a martir in all this, since he was not the only one raping girls, pretty much the whole football team knew, but thanks to Hannah, he became the most (if not the only) damaged. Except for Clay and maybe Zach, he was nice with everyone when he was sober, proving that alcohol can make people do some crazy things. Despite everyone hating on him, he still tried to be there for Justin, and he helped Tony, Alex and Tyler even when he didn't have to. I also think it's great that he tried to right his wrongs by "fixing" Monty, it's true he can't changed him, but at least stop him from hurting others and realizing that brotherhood has its limits, which it's something that the others should've realized when Bryce was raping the other girls. Maybe then, he wouldn't gone too far and Hannah would still be alive and Jessica wouldn't been raped.  Bryce trying to apologize to Mrs. Baker but without trying too hard was also a powerful scene, and then the sudden crying when he was doing yoga with his mom. On the other hand, his quemistry with Ari was beyond fantastic, and it really showed he was very lonely after all, which is why he had to go party and get drunk and be with girls all the time, so he could forget the rest of the world for a moment. I think that's a reason why he connected so good with Ari, since she wasn't blinded by the fact that he was a team leader, the popular guy or the rich handsome dude every girl wanted to be with, maybe she could've seen through all that and be the first girl who actually felt in love with him as a person and not as a stereotype. He trying to reconnect with his father at the restaurant and seeing the hope in his eye was sad too. He might be a monster, but his parents didn't help either. His father celebrating at his funeral, like... Are you serious right now?

I'm on the Tony Padilla episode (Episode 6), can someone explain to me why he could be a suspect for Bryce's death?

Spoilers:

Spoiler

Bryce helped him out by buying out his Mustang. He even offered more money than the price of the car. Tony accepted it and appreciated it.

Like what was the motive that they thought Tony had to kill Bryce?

It just doesn't make sense to me? It's not like Bryce was the one responsible for Tony's family's predicament.

I really enjoyed this season a lot. I felt they did good on letting the characters explain their trauma which was good. First half I thought Ani was great, she was in a lot of areas with Bryce cause she was nosy, but later half she got pretty annoying. Wish they fleshed out more of Monte’s character.

They thought Tony might have done it because it was Bryce's lawyers that got his (Tony's) family deported.

actually, indirectly (via the lawyers and his family's influence), it is an entirely  imaginable situation (from the perspective of the police and the investigation)

I wish they fleshed out more of Monty's character too, but at the same time, I can also understand why they didn't. As ****ed up of a character as Monty was (especially what he did to Tyler), like Bryce, I think this show did a good job of showing the "grey area" in his character.

People are not black or white. They're complex, and I think Monty's character (along with Bryce's) showed that. I kind of felt bad for him near the end because you can tell that the reason why he's such an asshole was because of his home life. And maybe it's because I relate to his struggle of trying to figure out his sexuality, but I actually really felt sorry for him when his dad spat on him.

I would want to see if his character could grow and evolve, but ending his story there was a perfectly tragic way of doing so. Monty went out with his father despising him and people thinking he was a killer. Having him grow and learn in future seasons, sure would've been entertaining and enjoyable, but also deciding to kill his character off shows realism. Not everything has a happy ending.

Urgh this show is really stretching sometimes.

Like how they explained Barry Walker's motive to kill Bryce was just a reach. :air:

I really love Clay and Justin's relationship tho. They're not 'in your face' bromance and all affectionate with each other. It's there but Clay and Justin don't really acknowledge it which is the kind of brotherhood I strive for.

I always end up mixing romance with brotherhood and it all gets fcked up for me and Clay and Justin's is really pure and simple and I love that.

Barry's reasoning might have been a reach, but I think Tony's is totally valid.

But it's not like Bryce sent his lawyers, is it? Just because they're his lawyers doesn't mean it was Bryce who sent the word.
