It's moving West-Southwest at 6mph right now, still a Cat 5 with sustained winds of 180 mph. It will be a miracle if there's anything left standing in the Bahamas by this time tomorrow. They'd rather have everyone evacuate now based on data than wait til the last minute if Dorian turns more sharply. Marathons, not sprints, millions of people live on the coastline so it's better to start evacuating now on the side of caution. Within the next 24 hrs it should start to turn, and when it does, it'll tell us how hard FL will get hit, if it'll hit the GA/Carolina coast head on.... maybe by this time tomorrow after the 11pm NOAA update. Beach erosion is already noticeable down South with the storm surge proceeding the storm and the wind here is blowing pretty steadily, a gust just knocked my trashcan over outside. For anyone wondering, that little bump on the east side of Florida is the space center and South of that is Merritt Island. I live directly on the inland side of those barrier islands. That's the one thing we never worry about. My house is on a hill and my town is pretty elevated anyway. If we get the surge that we're supposed to get then we may need to worry about flooding for the first time. NCgaga 4,345 Posted September 2, 2019 Share Posted September 2, 2019 Hurricane Dorian is most likely not making a direct landfall in the USA, but will come within 40 miles off the shore of Florida and North Carolina. People from Myrtle Beach to Wilmington need to really watch out for flooding, as Dorian will be pushing a lot of water inland in this area. The People of the Northern Bahamas are in the real danger. Winds of 185 mph, with gusts up to 220mph is the same as a EF-Tornado sitting on top of you for hours. It's possible parts of the northern Bahamas will be obliterated. It's not worth it to stay and "ride it out" get tf out while you can and lets hope it starts to turn and doesn't make U.S landfall.
