Babel 41,643
No, just no. I’m sorry but I’m tired of reading these “facts only” posts about the reality of the Amazon fires and the environmental disaster we’re living right now. Even IF the Amazon fires “aren’t that important” these kind of apocalyptic scenario are CRUCIAL to make people aware of the destruction of nature. How many people were alarmed about the destruction of the Amazon by deforestation before the fires went viral? almost NONE. There was ZERO conversations about the topic. I’d love that people start helping the environment by rational thoughts but the “rational thinking” clearly hasn’t done ****. We need more irrational cases like the apocalyptic Amazon fires to alarm people and get them on track on a more eco friendly living.

By misdirecting our outrage we feed into the far right's anti environmental message. I have a feeling you might've not fully read my post. Please do before you get pissed hahaha. Not at all coming from an anti environmentalist pov. I've participated in extinction rebellion protests. I just care about the truth. Reveal hidden contents Also just want to say that I always find it funny that people use the "I LIVE HERE" as a source. I live in France yet I know nothing about the french region of Aix en Provence. Living somewhere doesn't mean you can't be misinformed about what's going on lol. Whilst yes some of the deforestation is caused by fires, a vast majority of it is caused by land clearing for farming. Fires aren't the issue. Rampant deforestation is I LIVE HERE as in I experience first hand everything that's happening here and I don't rely in the media to tell me about what's happening. I get that fire isn't the only way of deforestation but these fires are being FUNDED BY OUR GOVERNMENT. And you did say in your post that these fires are natural fires, don't backpedal now. Yes the deforestation of our Amazon has been going on for decades and the numbers are very concerning. These fires are getting international attention FINALY. So I don't see the point of your post. Like I've already said. The amount of deforestation caused by fires is minimal The amount of deforestation caused by logging, cattle farming and construction is HUGE. It just happens that cutting trees down isn't as Glamorous as a forest burning The risks of prioritizing the fires over other sources of deforestation are: Government officials can manipulate people by using the lack of fires as proof the problem isn't as bad. Right wing media can point out the misinformation and discredit the whole environmentalist movement. Everyone you meet is fighting a battle you know nothing about. Be kind. Always. Babel 41,643
Spreading these types of threads doesn’t help the issue, it actually make people think everything is ok and continue with the destruction of the rainforests. Not only the Amazon, but many others around the world.

Right wing media constantly uses emotions over facts and we blast them over it. We should hold ourselves to the same standard as we hold our opponents. Otherwise that just gives them an excuse to point out our hypocrisy. While I agree that the awareness the fires have brought has helped, I am also saying it can be a double edged sword. This kind of misinformation will be used by the right to discredit environmentalist in the years to come. I think we should reframe our outrage towards Deforestation and Bolsonaro's reckless deregulation instead of the fires. Everyone you meet is fighting a battle you know nothing about. Be kind. Always. Economy 53,162
A lot of the stuff ur saying is what I said as well and I got constantly bashed as ignorant for it All I said is that the truth was being stretched and some statements exxagerated but that's the media now a days tbh Nevertheless there's a lot of man made damage being done to the forest that shouldn't just be ignored either

Trump got elected for many reasons. I’m sure not caring about certain right wing outlets isn’t one of them. People need to stop acting like a Republican winning after 8 years of Obama was some extraordinary event. It wasn’t. Sure, a demagogue like Trump winning was something we didn’t expect but if you put it in a historical context, it’s consistent. He will probably win re-election too. Right wing media tends to spew a lot of anti-environmentalist propaganda. No matter what anyone says or does they will continue to do it. Why preoccupy ourselves with what they think? Let’s focus on the facts and issues instead.

Just because misinformation fits your narrative doesn't mean you shouldn't call it out As a centrist the left really irks me with that Conservatives and far right annoy me in all kinds of ways But Liberals and the far left isn't perfect either. And one of the big issues I see with the left is that they have no issue dramatizing facts (essentially exxagerating the truth) and then justify it for being a good cause A good cause or not isn't the point. The truth should be the truth. If it's bad when conservatives aren't fully honest the left shouldn't get a free pass just because they might be trying to tackle issues or raise awareness So many ppl on the other thread came at me with comments like "you think the damage to the rain forest isn't something to be dramatic about?" And other comments like I was ignorant for not acknowledging how important the Amazon forest was Yet, the point I made was simply that specific statements were dramatizing the truth... I literally never said that the Amazon wasn't important or that the damage being done to it isn't something to make a deal about It's like if you don't hop on the the train to add a sprinkle of salt and pepper to sensationalism it's because your ignorant and don't care and I'm just like, that literally was not my point
