He doesn't need to be a genius to go the US census website and download some data and find out that average rent has increased by 64% since 1960, while average real household income has increased by 20% since 1960. The cost of rent has been growing faster than the real household income in the entire economy for the past sixty years. It's a nation-wide trend, at least in the US. The costs of living in big cities increase faster than the wages do, and that's the fundamental problem. People taking second jobs is just a response to this fundamental problem, it's not something stand-alone that should be treated out of context. Same here in Canada by far. I think that's a general issue in the developed world in general. The middle class is slowly falling behind on the treadmill My grandparents moved to Canada in the 1970s and payed off a house in 4 years on a below average wage and the house is a decent size Families in Canada in that era apparently typically had new cars, there was a high home ownership rate and many families even thrived on one income as many women stopped working after having kids NOW you have 2 mediocre incomes to get you to scrape by on rent and maybe save up enough to one day qualify for a 25 year mortgage The deterioration in the standard of living is ludicrus My dad apparently made more money than me per hour in the 1980s he said (and this is in nominal terms, not even adjusting for inflation) and I'm making a bit more than minimum wage some ppl make less The middle class is dying and so are oppurtunities and ppl go to school to end up with student debt despite their best efforts Some ppl have no choice but to get a second job
