Ben Shapiro: Working Two Jobs Is Your Fault

Conservative radio host Ben Shapiro encountered massive disgust and online blowback when he cavalierly suggested that it is poor people’s fault for choosing the wrong job it they are forced to take a second one to get by: “If you had to work more than one job to have a roof over your head or food on the table, you probably shouldn’t have taken the job that’s not paying you enough. That’d be a you problem.”

Shapiro’s comments unleashed a torrent of angry rebuttals, some of whom pointed out the falsehood embedded in his logic about how labor markets work, while others pointed out that Shapiro, who comes from a privileged background, sounded just like a “what a spoiled rich kid says.”

OT: His message is laden with the "cult of individualism," "rugged individualism," and the idea of "pulling yourself up by your bootstraps."  Well, what if you don't even have the boots?
This dude...:saladga:

Hate this guy. He talks fast using elaborate words but the content of what he's saying is just dumb and sad. Sometimes I even find him to sound a little angry about certain matters, I wonder what he's so angry about tbh.

Definitely a spoiled rich kid from Los Angeles

Spoiler

Shapiro grew up in a Jewish family in Los Angeles, California.[6] Shapiro developed a talent for violin at a young age,[7]having performed at the Israel Bonds Banquet in 1996 at twelve years of age.[8] Shapiro's parents both worked in Hollywood. His mother worked as an executive of a TV company and his father as a composer.[6] Shapiro's cousin is writer and former child actress Mara Wilson.[1]

I don't know what's wrong with him or what happened in his life but something definitely happened for him to behave like that. Sure he graduated from Harvard, and is an 'intellectual' but i'm not so sure about that tbh. There's a difference between knowing a lot of things and thinking critically

He's so out of touch. People with his amount of (undeserved) influence should actually experience first-hand why people are working 4 minimum wage jobs and still can't pay rent.

Disgusting.

While I may respect his right to voice his own opinion (emphasis on may), I feel like he is trying to stay purposefully blind to some challenges of the economy on the longer term track. He doesn't need to be a genius to go the US census website and download some data and find out that average rent has increased by 64% since 1960, while average real household income has increased by 20% since 1960.

The cost of rent has been growing faster than the real household income in the entire economy for the past sixty years. It's a nation-wide trend, at least in the US. The costs of living in big cities increase faster than the wages do, and that's the fundamental problem. People taking second jobs is just a response to this fundamental problem, it's not something stand-alone that should be treated out of context.
