During an interview for the December 6, 2006 issue ofĀ Australian music magazine āInpressā,Ā Gwen Stefani has commented about her experience when writting the song: There was actually a point at the end when we were in the studio together and I left crying, again, and I said, āIāve had enough.ā We were working on a track that was very personal to me, and she had written a lyric. I was like, āI donāt want to do this.ā I ended up rediscovering the song six months later and going, āOh my god, this song is great.ā It was a song I wrote for this boy I went out with in high school, who meant a lot to meālike my first kissing boyfriendāand he actually died a year ago. I havenāt known him all of those years, but he was a huge part of my life. He gave me a huge thing, which is the first time you love someone. Even if itās high school.
