The Sarajevo Film Festival is the premier and largest film festival in Southeast Europe,[1][2] and is one of the largest film festivals in Europe. It was founded in Sarajevo in 1995 during the siege of Sarajevo in the Bosnian Independence War, and brings international and local celebrities to Sarajevo every year. It is held in August and showcases an extensive variety of feature and short films from around the world.

25th Sarajevo Film Festival takes place August 16-23 under the patronage of UNESCO. Ahead of the official opening ceremony some 200 artists held a parade through Sarajevo, under the name „Art in motion“. Organization of the parade was funded and logistically supported by Sarajevo’s Centre Municipality and its Public Youth Culture Centre.

After the opening ceremony film THE SON by Bosnian-Herzegovinian director Ines Tanović has its world premiere in the Competition Programme – Feature Film. Besides the screening at the National Theatre, THE SON (a coproduction between Bosnia, Croatia, Romania, Slovenia and Montenegro) will also be screened tonight at the Raiffeisen Open Air Cinema. Members of the film’s cast and crew will introduce THE SON to the audience at both Festival venues.

On the occasion of the opening of the 2019 Sarajevo Film Festival, a gala reception for all Festival guests will be held at Hotel Europe. The Opening ceremony will conclude with a large fireworks display, co-funded by Sarajevo’s Old Town Municipality.

Honorary Heart of Sarajevo Award to Alejandro González Iñárritu

The winner of two consecutive Best Director Oscar awards for his films THE REVENANT and BIRDMAN received the Honorary Heart of Sarajevo tonight in recognition of an exceptional contribution to the art of film.

“It gives us a great pleasure to honor this distinguished auteur who keeps pushing the limits by transforming his unique artistic vision into unpredictable and outstanding movies.  His films are characterized by a distinctive style and pace and they captivate and thrill audiences and film critics around the world. We are happy that we’ll have a chance to welcome him at the 25th Sarajevo Film Festival and present him with the Honorary Heart of Sarajevo award for his immense contribution to the art of film with timeless, award-winning classics that he has been making throughout his career,” said Sarajevo Film Festival director Mirsad Purivatra.

Alejandro G. Iñárritu made his feature directorial debut at the Cannes Semaine de la Critique in 2000 and was nominated for a Foreign Film Academy Award with AMORES PERROS. His following credits include 21 Grams; BABEL, which garnered seven Oscar nominations and won the Best Director Award at the 2006 Festival de Cannes; and BIUTIFUL, presented in Competition in 2010 at Cannes.
