Vertical videos are just another way to encourage more streams, like lyric videos. They are intended to be viewed on spotify on smartphones.

There's no reason why vertical videos shouldn't be as good as normal music videos, it's literally just another format, but yes, tragically most vertical videos are as bad as that Nicki one I guess because they won't get as much exposure as normal videos labels don't want to invest much budget into them.
