Why did Gaga not have more #1s during BTW Era

I think she lost steam because Judas was supposed to be a BR/PF level suh-mayash but it was surprisingly controversial, and IIRC it leaked early leading to a rush release and a shortened debut week, which threw off its first week numbers.  Poor Judas deserved more  Then TEOG was going strong, but the music video hiccup threw off its rollout, I think it might have been postponed so the timing was disrupted as well? After that I guess it was just overexposure  MTN deserved soooo much more  I was trying hard to promo it throughout December 2011 but my friends were tired  2011 was a great year for pop music as well, the other songs that outcharted it were mostly still iconic bops.

Some say it's ARTPOP that started her commercial decline but that was in fact degrading since Judas. She was simply overexposed after being everywhere since 2009. The entire era is known for being quite frontloaded so all the impressive numbers rely on the first half of the era.

I honestly don't even think it could've been avoided.

She was almost every 2 weeks on a talk show with a performance, no joking, she was everywhere.

Because the overexposure happened with Born This Way the single, by the time the next singles came out people were already sick of Gaga. She was literally everywhere even before the album was released.

And honestly, Born This Way was not that well received. It was successful because of the enormous hype, but when that faded people were not into it. And the next singles had a fairly similar heavy sound, so they were not that successful.

Also, 2011 was the year Adele exploded, which was very much the "anti-Gaga" and what people were looking for.

Born this Way is kind of a weird case. I remember it got dragged by some folks, but its reputation definitely increased as time went on. I think part of it is because later gay anthems like people by Macklemore made any slightly cringey parts of BTW look great in comparison. Also I feel like Gaga's consistent embrace of the LBGTQ community for ten years now has made people reevaluate the song a bit...and the kids who did feel helped by the song are grown up and have talked about how it did help them (I remember a music journalist wrote a piece on how BTW meant a lot to him as a closeted kid in college).

I'm surprised you and I got to 6. I mean, I can't honestly even remember it. Plus Judas is not a good song and was a terrible choice as follow up to BTW. Edge of Glory, is a great song and got to no 3. What a coincidence

Exposure doesn’t mean guaranteed hit it means more people are more likely to tune off because they are bored/sick/annoyed of that particular artist

Born this Way had a  decent reception, but the ones who didn't like it REALLY didn't like it and so in general it came off more as a mixed reception, and it started the over exposure because it (and Gaga) were everywhere...and since that was the lead single it definitely impacted everything else. Obviously, the album was well reviewed and sold insanely well but the press definitely impacted the singles a bit and started chipping away at her general reputation.

Judas didn't help, either, since I remember some critics thought it sounded way too similar to her previous songs and then there was the "overblown" controversy around it and people started coming for her even more. If she had released The Edge of Glory, Marry the Night, or You and I as the second single I think she probably would have had a number one.

And as others pointed out, there's a cycle to things. Over the top pop and electropop was starting to become "out" and stripped back music was gaining favor...just like nowadays trap infused pop and low tempo pop is more popular than bubblegum pop.

I may be remembering it wrong, but I think even some music critics wrote up some pieces when The Edge of Glory came out and were like this should have been the lead single or the second single.

Everyone says it’s because of overexposure but it isn’t. BTW was a bad choice cause she made very catchy party songs in TF/TFM. But in BTW there wasn’t any. And people want to hear catchy dance songs not songs about being who you are or dark songs. And the production of album was very messy and loud.
