Echoing a bit between Craig and Philip, and it might sound kind of contradictory, but fwiw the creative process for me at least ends up finding the balance between diving in and stepping out — full on immersion in the work and then giving it some breathing room …

Other than that with bigger projects like a hundred songs (also kind of contradictory) it might help to sort a connecting thread or theme or motif that ties it all in together, and/or breaking it up into segments (10 sets of 10 songs or something like that) that have a shared theme / sound / motif, that way the work ends up being like a story or a puzzle; then the “finishing” becomes just bringing the pieces or chapters (songs) together to put the picture in focus … if that makes any sense. That always gives me the catalyst or spark to finish a project, almost working your way back from whatever the message is you want to put into the world, and all the individual pieces are just part of a whole …

Spoiler

Or, I guess, one of my professors back in the day just said, “you have the whole canvas to cover, but don’t look at it that way; figure out the one point on the canvas — what’s the one message you want the audience to take away from your work? Sort that out; then show it in a million different ways to cover the canvas — but no matter where the audience looks they still see that one message.” So, if it helps, maybe with the songs, they’re a hundred songs but there might be something that ties them all together … but idk how that helps procrastination — so, feel free to disregard.

But, all of that’s abstract, and if you’re sorting the brass tacks how to get it done — idk, sometimes just setting a deadline helps, but I’m also a “the realest work comes at the eleventh hour” kind of person …

Either way, just random input, but Godspeed, and collaborators are good for perspective and breathing new life into the archives so you’ve got that … channelling all creative energy your way

Awee thank you so much this is such a BIG BIG push to my self drive. I’m gonna take those words with me in the process. Really feeds off my creative passion. The more I get a view of these perspectives the more I feel like I really need to still give it all in the middle of trying-to-maintain-balance❤️

i don't know if this can work for you haha but as a tip  you mustn't try to force things, in my case (i also make music, i will soon release a decent ep haha) i sit on my computer, i open ableton or any other music software and i simply i experiment with other sounds and it may be that those sounds can fit perfectly into a song you already have or can do something totally new with it.
with regard to the lyrics i always carry a notebook with my cell phone and when i get a melody i record it on my cell phone and write it in the notebook.
if you feel that your creativity is stagnant, something that i usually do is walk through the city, it may be that the sound of a car or the siren of an ambulance gives you an idea haha or try to listen to moving musical genres / watch different movies in order to have different perspectives
in my case i am also very lazy with music but when i feel that creativity comes to me i take it to the fullest and that makes me move forward a lot
another tip I could give you is to share your demos with friends, they could help you with some melody / lyric / sound
and I think it's all haha sorry for my english if there is any grammar mistake

I usually can’t sleep cause the second i close my eyes, i start thinking. So that’s when i go and read my unfinished lyrics. I choose a random song that i really want to finish and let myself be inspired by what i’ve already written. I just focus on what the song is about and what’s actually on my mind. I never write about things that are not true to me just to make it sound good you know? Like, everyone has written at least a love song i think but i  won’t cause i’m asexual and i’ve pretty much always been single. So i just try not to lie :huntyga: it’s like a diary but i can make it sound good

Not forcing subject definitely helps

Be careful with that. If you do that too much the time will pass and you'll be stressed out about it to no end. I'm a musician too, and you need to treat this as if it is your job, because it is. You need to focus on making progress and just working on it, even if you don't feel creatively inspired. Because there will be times when you have to create that you won't feel inspired or creative, but there will be people that don't care about it.

Yes yes. I was supposed to finish this back in 2018. And I haven’t this 2019.. ‘cause of the breaks i took. Now the regrets are overflowing lmao. So this is a GIGANTIC Lesson for me thanks for saying that. No more regrets 2020.:sara:

but enough about me lmao yes i have that laziness too but then i revisit my project w a fresh start and surprise myself. sometimes if i revisit something it's like i forgot what it sounded like and I either love it or fix it w a new beat or melody.

Same, I have some songs that I’ve been working on for years and it’s only after forgetting about them and revisiting them later when you realize what’s really good and what’s not worth working on/finishing

The only reason I have unfinished songs is because I lost the inspiration behind them lol but yeah, sometimes I go back & find have written songs that have great lyrics & take them & out then with other unfinished songs & create a completely new concept. Just gotta make sure the song still flows, same number of syllables per line etc.

I think you should keep writing new ones! Maybe you've never finished one because you haven't found that one that stands out. Or maybe you can use the best pieces of a few different songs to make a finished one
