Forbes: "Katy's Small Talk is a bore"

Katy Perry just delivered her new single “Small Talk,” and while that's big news for her millions of fans, the song doesn't sound like it's destined for great things.

Sadly, "Small Talk" isn't the pop banger Perry has been known to produce, and it's tough to imagine it performing very well on the charts. Despite some fun lyrics and a solid team behind the production, Perry's latest is actually fairly stale, and it fails to really go anywhere interesting until after the two-minute mark, at which point even her most ardent fans may have tuned out.

The last 20 seconds of the song show what was possible, but the rest of "Small Talk" is rather boring, which is a word nobody would have used to describe Perry only a few years ago. The title could have served as a promotional single or potentially an album cut and gotten away without much criticism, but it doesn't have the power to stand on its own as a huge single.

In addition to “Small Talk” and “Never Really Over,” Perry has also lent her vocals to songs fronted by other artists, with Daddy Yankee and Snow’s “Con Calma” remix jumping up the Hot 100 and hitting No. 22 after she jumped on board. Her Zedd collaboration “365” didn’t go very far, peaking at No. 86 and falling off the all-genre ranking quickly afterward.

It’s true though. Katy needs to reinvent herself if she wants to still gain success with mainstream pop. The public and casual fans are just not interested in her new stuff anymore because It sounds so uninspired and basic.
