HoneyB 27,926
“The shot in question appeared in Beyoncé’s fashion spread inside the magazine last September. Photographer Tyler Mitchell shot the series at a country house in England. “When she sat down for me there was immediately the kind of comfort level you’d have with a friend, which was quite unexpected,” Mitchell told Vogue last fall. “You’d imagine someone as famous as Beyoncé to be protective of her image, but she was really an open book—and that’s exactly what you want as a photographer.” The singer chose Mitchell—then 23—to photograph her, making him one of the youngest photographers with an image on Vogue’s cover. (According to the magazine, David Bailey was 23 when he shot his first cover, too.) He is also the first African American photographer to shoot the cover. “For so long, black people have been considered things,” Mitchell told Vogue. “We’ve been thingified physically, sexually, emotionally. With my work I’m looking to revitalize and elevate the black body.” Mitchell, who was mainly known as a street fashion and skate photographer before the Beyoncé shoot, has since gone on to photograph another cover featuring Zendaya and celebrity spreads for the magazine. The National Portrait Gallery confirmed in a tweet that it had acquired the portrait. “We’re just so crazy in love with her that we had to do it!” the tweet reads. “We look forward to adding this new work to our collection.” In another tweet, NPG wrote, “Our mission is to tell the story of America by portraying the people who shape this nation’s history, development, and culture. We are happy to work with Tyler to acquire his photograph of Beyoncé Knowles into the Portrait Gallery’s collection.”” source:https://dcist.com/story/19/08/06/national-portrait-gallery-adds-vogues-beyonce-photo-to-its-collection/ This is so cool I’m so happy and proud for the photographer it’s really inspiring to see young people achieving their dreams and goals, it’s a reminder to dream big y’all! 💋 𝕊𝕥𝕖𝕡 𝕐𝕒 ℂ𝕠𝕠𝕜𝕚𝕖𝕤 𝕌𝕡💋🍪

I'm actually surprised that an image of Bey wasn't in the National Portrait Gallery sooner. I thought they were trying to put in more contemporary, living figures at the top of their game. It's a nice photograph, but I kind of wish they had gone with the portrait of her for the Homecoming live album–it's so striking.

They actually do have a picture of her solo debut album dangerously in love! I do agree though the homecoming picture was definitely a moment! 💋 𝕊𝕥𝕖𝕡 𝕐𝕒 ℂ𝕠𝕠𝕜𝕚𝕖𝕤 𝕌𝕡💋🍪

CautiousLurker 19,471
I mean, this is great and all... (even tho I was under the impression that their portrait gallery was paintings but I just googled and it isn't, at least not entirely, so whatever, even tho I'd appreciate this more if someone painted a portrait of her) ...and I'm happy for the artist especially since he's quite young, but... why is it the statements from photographers (and fine artists) that always read like the biggest most pretentious bullsh*t you could possibly conceive I get that it's not their job to be good with words, but they always try to compensate for that so hard and it always sounds so bad It's a joke! When you give me that look, it's a joke!
