Economy 52,861
https://www.bnnbloomberg.ca/fed-cuts-rates-by-quarter-point-and-signals-potential-for-more-1.1295241 The US Federal Reserve cut rates to a range of 2% to 2.25% a drop of 25 basis points from 2.25% to 2.5% While the Federal Reserve claims it is to shield the US from a global slowdown... Some question if the Fed is giving in to Donald Trump's demands of lower rates given unemployment is at a 40 year low and the equity market remains hot
imnotyourbabe10 6,120
Hi Economy! Thank you for always keeping us updated on these issues. (I wish I was more well-versed on these topics given that I'm from a social science background but, alas, I am not). I guess I'm confused about how all this is working out? Is it "good" to have these types of cuts? While unemployment is at a bigly low, I guess I'm wondering who is really experiencing the benefits of all the above? I know several of my friends who are college grads or post-college grads are still struggling to pay off loans, afford housing, find a job, have a dual income of sorts, etc. Even places like retail giants such as Target who say "We pay $15 an hour by 2020" are really just slashing their employee's hours by 2020 to combat the raising wages. Does the unemployment rate account for (crumby) part-time, no benefits, work? If so, the general public are being so misled! All this is to say, about the economy and Feds (which I know have been contentious with Tr**p)...

Unemployment is only one measure of the economy The average hours worked, there's average hourly wages, part-time vs full-time job gains, labor force participation rate etc etc etc By most metrics the economy is not the strongest in 40 years Still tho, it's good enough that a cut in interest rates when it's already low a little questionable tbh
