A Canadian Oil Company wants to develop a $20.6 Billion Open pit mining project in Alberta

The Oil production would start in 2026 and last over 4 decades till almost 2070

This particular project would destroy a lot of forest, wetlands and possibly disturb some Aboriginal communities

Canada the last several years has favoured In-Situ Oil Sands projects which cause a lot less environmental harm than open pit mining projects. However extreme opposition against the oil sands and pipeline blockades has made the economics so challanging and investment drop so much that the Government is considering approving this project as it wants to take anything it can get

Ugh oil is so outdated, they should invest in more eco-friendly things that arent as harmful instead of digging the hole deeper so to speak

I know some of these companies are. They been looking into expanding Into the green space

Anyway oil isn't outdated and Canadian oil from the oil sands will probably be needed for the next century or more

Canada produces heavy oil. It's not the most ideal for gasoline or diesel or those kind of fuels as it's a lot of refining needed for that. But it's perfect for plastics, asphalt, shingles, oil based paints, oil based fertilizers, pesticides and countless other petro-chemicals that it's use won't go away once we switch to electric cars and produce all our electricity with green power

By fighting pipelines so hard a lot of the environmental progress that was being made on the oil sands in part due to government intervention has stalled because the oil discounts on the Canadian benchmark is starving the companies out of needed capital

This is a bad project I don't want approved... But maybe if the industry wasn't forced into such a bad place the government would have better choices of projects to approve tbh

You mean environmental protests and staged events?

It's a lot like getting too much exposure.

The very people you want will get sick of hearing about it all the time

I'll give u a few examples of what I mean

- a certain percentage of profits by law has to go towards development of greener technology to extract the oil. The stalled pipelines creating oil discounts on prices means profits are low and some companies are running losses so green development is nearly dead ATM

- it means more oil by railway which is not only less safe to carry it that way, but also congests other goods that need rail space to be carried

- When investment is high the government doesn't approve every project and can select the best ones including the least ecologically damaging. If investment hadn't dropped, this terrible project probably wouldn't even be getting considered right now

That's what I mean by backfiring

Beaurocracy....

Far left regulation and restriction is in effect doing the opposite of the intended goal.
