imnotyourbabe10 5,995 Posted July 20, 2019 Share Posted July 20, 2019 I understand we are all on a stan/cult site but, truly, this Kim K. and Bieber advocacy (which are themselves good acts, I'm not disqualifying that part) is a symptom of late stage capitalism and the cult of the celebrity worship. Instead of lauding rich celebrities (who do sometimes use their platforms as they should) and if we wish to "drain the swamp" or change how politics as usual is done, then why don't more academics, teachers, counselors, scientists and so on run for office? That is where the rubber meets the pavement, the research, which often informs policy and who better to direct policies than the experts themselves? IDK, I'm trying to let go of feeling pissed that silly celebs are finally speaking up but am disappointed that all these years in academia (will have spent at least 8 years in it on and off now for various degrees, myself) do not pay off like getting YouTube or Twitter or sex tape famous did for others.
