Well as far as i know, a modular synth is made of different modules that you put together. You can mix and match. Many modular components are analog, but they don't have to be. The two are completely different things, even though most modular synthesizers/systems are at least partially analogue. It's definitely used a lot in experimental idm music and in the chicago scene. Thanks for the link! Love watching these performances. It's like, the main criticism of electronic music performances is the lack of spontaneity. Although it's a misconception, many people wonder "How can it truly be a 'performance' if all you do is press play?" With the customizable modules, an electronic performance becomes much more improvised and spontaneous, and therefore impressive for those of us who don't fully appreciate the work that goes into making an electronic track if we can't physically see it happening right in front of us. 

Imagine Gaga slaying a gigantic, 50 foot high modular synth wall and plugging and unplugging tubes and wires to sample her own amazing hits!! Gawd that would slay so hard live!!!!!!!!! Like the keytar on steroids!
