I don't believe it is. I think he made a valid point. If a character is of a certain race it doesn't make sense to pander to political correctness and change everything about that character. The character was written that way for a reason. Imagine if a movie about the Vikings got made and the whole cast was black. People would have a right to complain. This is sort of the same thing here.

(I'm not racist before anybody comes for me, I just understand this person's point of view).

But what relevance does Ariel's skin colour have in The Little Mermaid? Nothing  So why is it being made a thing about? Her skin colour is irrelevant, no change has been made to anything out of it

"Cartoon Ariel was white so she should be white!" - this is an adaptation, it doesn't need to be a spitting image of the original. Things are added or cut out or changed and so on  No harm has been done by a non-white person being cast to play Ariel, if anything it's positive because it gives a newer generation more diversity to look at in awe

Ariel was never defined by her looks, always by her voice. It genuinely shocks me that people don't understand that. Like, look at this video:

Sorry, but this is Ariel. More than sounding like Ariel, she even physically looks and acts like her I think the casting is perfect.

Thanks for sharing this. You're absolutely right, she fits the role perfectly. 

I was on the fence about her casting not because of race, but because I'm not a fan of change. I like familiarity and I wanted it to be exactly like the cartoon. It's like Will Smith playing the genie in Aladdin, I'm fine with a talented actor of any race to play a part like that and I actually like Will Smith, but I did not enjoy seeing how they changed the character. It's the same with the Sonic trailer and how he looks nothing like the original character. I don't think it's selfish for people to speak out on the changes, because some people look forward to the nostalgia and when they find out it's not being made for them or even aimed at them as a demographic it can make you feel like this: 

It might be selfish to feel that way about a movie and it's characters. But having said that, I am happy that a black girl has been given the role. As a white person I was aware that other ethnicities weren't represented enough and I'm always rooting for them to be given decent parts. But I'm not going to lie and say the changes to the little mermaid haven't disappointed me a little bit. However, I am looking forward to seeing how she owns the role because she seems to be insanely talented.

I do understand that.

But what I am disappointed by is how people don't seem to realize (not intentionally, obviously) that skin color doesn't change anything substantial White people are overrepresented to the point where people are now en masse commenting about how "their" Ariel is ruined just because she's not white. That is scary to me. And what is even more scary to me is how the people voicing their criticism don't even realize they're talking the language of far-right extremism.

It might not be about race for you, but I'm afraid the whole perspective that Ariel being black is supposedly a change is already fundamentally racist, there's simply no other way around it. I'm not saying that makes you and other people bad persons, but it is important to point out racism where it is, 'cause usually people don't even realize what kind of discourse or political stance they're unconsciously supporting through their words

I am 100000% sure people here would cancel any company that would dare to cast a white actor for a role that was previously portrayed as black. Why? Because majority of people on GGD think that transgender roles should be played by transgender actors --> black roles by black actors. But when Disney casts black actress for a role that was always portrayed as white people are okay with that. 

I agree that POC actors have it harder to find a job, but the solution is not in double standards which only lead to more racistic behaviour of other people

I get what you're saying but you seem to be conflating two things Just because there's a double standard among dumb people doesn't mean that casting a black woman as Ariel was a mistake. Those are two different issues.

I never said casting a black woman as Ariel is a problem - "I agree that the race of the character has no relevancy" the point I tried to make is the fact that people here are okay with that (which is good) but on the other hand if somebody casted a white woman for a role of a black character, GGD would be on fire.

Reverse racism doesn’t exist, so it’s not a double standard. There’s so many white princesses.
