Nope. It playes at Danmark.

Nop it doesn’t. a danish writer wrote the original fairytale.

But the Disney adaption is NOT set in Denmark or anywhere near Europe, it is set in the Caribbean, so sick of people saying the same lie over and over again.

It’s more than a ‘crab with an accent’ :laughga: They never specified the setting but everything points to it being in the Caribbean, no overthinking here luv :laughga:

let me remind you that you are the same people that say : this role in the play is a men so a girl cannot play it.... Thank you Sarah Bernhardt

Full of mess

against racism forever. Against anybody spending time saying why this is not exactly a good choice because you know, Ariel is white and uh, yeah she's got a Caribbean friend ?????

There is an essay to pen about that babes so I don't even think posting three times on this thread is a problem. I don't feel guilty.

It's not time anymore for young people like us to argue about this. By the time monsters shall have made a petition or a kindness hashtag..... Not arguing over the freakin color of a bullshit story nobody really knows.

Who here ever read the actual story ???????????? Who here know about the actual spell. Ariel is not even losing her voice in the book.... You pissed me off

hello hello baby.

If these people are so butthurt about how a fictional character is portrayed in real life, I wonder where they were when this happened

Since she's black now can I have daddy Idris Elba as King Triton pls

Omg, didn’t think of that.

maybe they should cancel the movie and turn it into a Triton prequel with Idris Elba.

The same tired excuse people use when they aren't attracted to entire races because it's not their "preference" when it ignores the entire structural reality of how that supposed  "preference" got constructed to begin with.

Can a person not agree with the casting choice? Sure, for legitimate reasons. Someone's race not matching your idea of a character is not one of them, and that's what this comes down to.

How tragic for white people that ONE character isn't going to look like them. There's only, oh, 90% of the other movies and actors who will though.

So what you expect us to lie and say we're happy with the casting choice?

It's not an excuse, an excuse implies a responsibility was dodged. Everyone is free to feel how they feel, I do agree that how they express it has to be respectful. You saying that a person has to have "legitimate reasons" for not preferring something is completely irrational, that's now how the world works. You don't need any reason to justify how you actually feel, I don't see thought police around.

I didn't even imply that they should change Halle, nor did I express any negativity. I simply expressed that it's ok not to like a casting choice. No need to justify one's preference. I even stated that if Disney wants to be more progressive they need to have more Black Princesses and I have been saying this for a while.

And calm down, it's not tragic at all. Not everyone is putting blood, sweat and tears into this lol. I simply didn't agree with the casting choice, doesn't mean I'm mad or spreading hateful petitions online. I'll still watch the movie and I'm sure Halle will do well. I'll probably even praise her but still if I was in charge of casting, am I obligated to go out of my way to cast her? No, I'll probably cast the person that appeals to my fantasy of the animated movie. Now relate it to race all you want but it's simply a childhood thing. You can either believe me or look too much into it. I'm a huge comic fan and I legit said nothing when Starfire (a yellow skinned character with straight hair) was cast Black and given curls in Titans tv show, I didn't even care.

But y'all can reach for the skies and make everyone racist.

Absurd.

The whole point of the movie was that Eric falls for Ariel not because of her looks but because of her voice, aka her soul.

Ariel was never defined by her looks, always by her voice. It genuinely shocks me that people don't understand that. Like, look at this video:

Sorry, but this is Ariel. More than sounding like Ariel, she even physically looks and acts like her :rip: I think the casting is perfect.

Look, I really don’t mind this casting but let me remind you that if a white actress were cast as Tiana everyone would lose their minds.

:lmao:

I'm sorry but that makes no sense and I really take issue with you using that completely inappropriate comparison to defend your own pov.

People would lose their minds because Tiana was the first black princess in the whole bunch, and her entire storyline takes place in a setting of racism. Black culture is intertwined with that character.

Meanwhile Ariel has no reason for being white at all. Her skin color literally makes no difference except in terms of... looks. I posted a video above, tell me Halle doesn't look, act and sound like Ariel :rip:

Is it that unimaginable that Halle was chosen (a) because she genuinely portrayed Ariel the best out of all options; (b) because this gave Disney an opportunity to take a step in a more positive direction in terms of their atrocious history of visual diversity? Why would that be bad?

Not all people who are mad at this casting are racists, but they for sure are displaying racism. It is absolutely despicable to say or even imply that an uber talented black actress cannot play a character just because she happens to be white even if her skin color is of absolutely no ****ing importance on any level in the original movie :madge: Super disappointed in y'all tbh, ngl. I cannot believe how goddamn normal far right paradigms are becoming. You guys don't even know what you're contributing to...

Disney is not remaking these movies for nostalgia sake, they're after new audiences for who the old animated movies are just that, old. They'll make billions from those for years to come, from box office, to merchandising, Disney +, the parks, etc, these movies will continue to make billions for the next decades while the racist millennials get old and die. In another 40/50 years they'll remake them again in whatever media form that takes place like VR or whatever comes.

The girl is beautiful and has great singing abilities, like many have pointed the colour of her skin is irrelevant for the story, and her hair will be digital for most of the time because of underwater scenes. Hopefully Disney was expecting the racist backlash and prepared her for that, like anything in the toilet social media, this will be forgotten.

Nevermind the disney princess roster dominated by white princesses. Just because one changed color everyone decided to throw a fit.

Y'all hear sumn?

Why these studios don't have this foresight is beyond me.

Or maybe they do, lets be honest, everyone is talking about the movie, and I dont think that would be the case if they got any white actress that follows the original design.

Its Disney we are talking about, they arent just going to make a mistake like this without a reason

So it's not enough people are denying a black woman the right to portray the main character, now they're gonna claim that she was only hired to intentionally spark racist outcries just so the movie would be talked about? :rip:

My disgust reaches new depths every few hours, it seems.
