NCgaga 4,279
Gaga shouldn’t play Ariel either. It doesn’t matter that Gaga is white. Gaga isn’t a 16 year old ginger. This calling everyone racist thing is getting old. Just make Ariel look like Ariel- they haven’t done that to any of the other princesses. And it’s not just the casting of Ariel either. Melissa McCartney is the WRONG choice as well. Emma Watson was the wrong choice for belle as well- but no one wants to say one thing about people complaining about that- because they are white, and you could care less. A lot of you jumped in this thread just WAITING for someone to disapprove and call them racist. It’s getting ****ing old and y’all need to chill with that toxicity. People have opinions that aren’t revolved around race. Don’t even listen to reasons just “nope, she’s black, and you hate it- so you’re a racist. TOXIC AS HELL. YourCureness 2,844
I can't with people making a big deal of the skin color of a character who is half fish. The only right casting criteria for this is if the girl can act, can sing, and is at least half a human being. Race does not matter for these kind of roles. giskardsb 12,565
The Little Mermaid isn't a history channel original that needs accuracy to historical figures. The race or hair color of the actress doesn't mean anything. Besides, Will Smith isn't actually blue, right?
BUtterfield 8 40,748
If you ppl want to get technical and realistic about a fictional character let me say this: A dark skinned mermaid makes more sense because of being in the sun. a pale mermaid would live in the ocean abyss. It’s because Ariel was portrayed as a Ginger. Being a Ginger myself, she was the only ginger princess growing up. Always kind of saw a bit of myself in her. It was always my favorite movie. So to see that when it came time to make a live action movie of the only Ginger so far- it was disappointing to see they altered her look to be something completely different. They haven’t done that to any princess. People always get upset when someone is cast completely different than the original- but since Ginger’s are white- a lot of you guys don’t really give a ****, or want to see it from a different point of view. It’s easier to just call people a racist- and disregard their reasoning. Its a mermaid. A fictional hybrid of a European fairytale. But whatever- give her a red wig and I’ll get over it. They did not use that in any capacity other than maybe the design of the castle. If you're that bothered by a fairytale creature not pale enough for your liking, 🎉condragulations gurl 🎉 You still have the animated movie. So what? Pocahontas was a child and never fell in love with John Smith. We wanted a live re-imagining of the 1989 classic that started the Disney renaissance. Cinderella, Beauty and the Beast, Lion King, Jungle Book, Aladdin have all been casted appropriately to portray the magic and nostalgia of the originals. Theres no problem with a black actress being Ariel. But she doesn’t look the slightest to what we have come to know Ariel to be. The Little Mermaid was huge because prior to that, Disney movies were all lower budget animalistic character stories. TLM was the first HUGE success for the company following Walt’s death. Because of TLM we got all those amazing 90s Disney movies we have grown to love. So when I look at this movie that is straying from what the original is like, it’s somewhat saddening that they had to change this particular film to modernize it. I understand the original story, but the Disney 1989 film is what we wanted remade. This to me is a different Little Mermaid than what I grew up with. With the logic you have, they could have easily made Belle or Cinderella black because skin tone is not important to their character. But they didn’t because that wouldn’t have reflected the originals. BYE
