So, in a sense, comparing Buttigieg to Obama is very fitting. The progressive argument is that we have had enough of the corporate politician and neoliberalism. The progressive/social democratic intent is, in fact, to save capitalism from itself. Because this is how government works. It is a compromise, between conservative, moderate and liberal forces. Obama gave hundreds of thousands of uninsured people affordable healthcare. He saved lives and made people’s lives better. He pushed the ACA through Congress-something that the Democratic Presidents before him were unable to do. A President is not a King. If Bernie becomes President, he cannot pass Medicare for all with a stroke of a pen. If the majority of states don’t want his version of insurance for all, he will have to compromise, just like Obama did. I’m not disagreeing with the fact politics is about compromise but it’s always the Democrats who have to compromise and not the other way around. That needs to change. The GOP didn’t want the wall, so it didn’t happen. All the states are not going to agree to a Medicare for all program, just because a Democratic President wants it. Just like they aren’t going to pay off everyone’s student’s loans and make college free for everyone. We have to show up to vote in massive numbers, at every election, every year, all across the country. We also have to be somewhat realistic and understand that a President is constricted on what he can accomplish. No one said “give up”, just to be realistic and understand the system.
