Defmix100 6,393
didn't she say that when she first started she had the option to own her masters or be given something like $10,000 and she chose the masters? Most artists go for the money especially if they are close to broke at the time obviously but it's the worst decision
The Child 18,997
I honestly don’t know and I wish she does. ‘If religion be the cause of disunity, then irreligion is surely to be preferred.’ ‘Abdu’l-Bahá
OMonster 14,675
Also, can someone clarify the importance of masters... Like, how can an artist not own their music? And if they don't, what does that mean? How, for example, is Taylor Swift so rich... yet doesn't own a single one of her hits? subtext / fantasy

And if they don't, what does that mean? How, for example, is Taylor Swift so rich... yet doesn't own a single one of her hits? As far as I know, this is how it goes: 1. Most artists do not own their masters (The beatles, Shakira are a few "big names" that come to mind), this is something that the record labels usually request as part of giving them a record deal. 2. Record companies do this so they can control what to do with said songs and profit from them, for example, they can create compilations (Now, that's what I call music! for instance), lease the songs for commercial purposes (like when they appear on tv shows) and so on. 3. Taylor and other artists become rich from Royalties (as songwritters specially), their record deals (they recieve money for the music they make) and mainly, Touring. Also, they often have other sources of income such as Taylor promoting Apple Music or Gaga doing commercials for Toudor etc.
LaLa 19,661
No, she doesn't, Interscope does. This means they own the songs, and she gets paid royalties on them, in whatever percentage was agreed to in her contract. Before she re-negotiated her contract (before Joanne I'm pretty sure) she wasn't getting paid any streaming royalties. This article has some scans of her old contract, it's mainly talking about the streaming rights, but does use language that indicated they own the master recordings. 20 minutes ago, OMonster said: Also, can someone clarify the importance of masters... Like, how can an artist not own their music? And if they don't, what does that mean? How, for example, is Taylor Swift so rich... yet doesn't own a single one of her hits? The vast majority of of record contracts have the label owning the masters (which means the actual physical recording, and also the copyrights), and giving the artist a cut of the profits. And artist can be independant of course, then they would own everything, but then you also have to do everything yourself. Most people want to sign with a record label because in exchange the label will pay for stuff. Recording costs, travel, promotion, videos etc. They have contacts in radio to help get your music out there. Most people sighing these contacts are just starting out and are in no position to negotiate to own their masters. Taylor is powerful enough that she was able to work something out on her new contract, but there was no chance she was getting that when she was first signed. When they dropped her they offered to let her keep some of her advance if they could keep the work she had done under them but she said no and gave the money back. Am I wrong in remembering she said ARTPOP related things belonged to Troy and that's why after they parted the app didn't end up happening and no other songs were released? Surely Interscope own everything if they own the masters so I don't understand how things didn't continue after Troy
