Madonna - God Control

If there’s something of central importance that needs to be addressed, Madonna will do it, she’s always been like that and it defines her.

I think the nightclub footage that made the final cut is more glossy but not as vehement as the footage that was shown in the teasers, other than that, the video is super effective at conveying its message, the room scenes are well acted and captured, making the emotions and message clear. Madonna pressing the typewriter’s POWER/RETURN key to then cut to footage from the protests and news, and a distracted/indifferent Madonna getting ready to have “fun” at the nightclub was a nice touch.

I couldn’t possibly like Madame X more than I do, it’s been lovely.

I like the message, it's very important. Also the director is Jonas Åkerlund a truly genius.

I don't like the song, But I'm glad she is doing something authentic, without ridiculous collaborations.

Amazing video! An idea to make the video even better: the character behind the typewriter finally finishes the paper, walks outside to give a speech and it turns out she's a politician or even the president

I think she just wanted to present realism with this video. Good fights never end.

i think this WAS planned to be the lead, as it was a the first video shot for the era (back in march/april). Maybe they worried it would be TOO controversial and they’d have another American Life disaster their hand.

If you think about it, the singles went from super safe to super campy (Medelling, I Rise, Crave, Future, Dark Ballet, God Control, (possibly) Batuka)

Finally someone with the truth. Do you imagine how this song would have been performed on the Billboard Awards. I mean Medellín was a great performance, but the impact God Control would have had.

Is there plans to do a televised performance of this song in the US?

The scene about her being robbed at gun point, as many pointed out, is a reference to the fact that she was herself robbed and raped at 19, but it actually goes beyond that and it's all part of the narrative and premise of the video.

In a very simplistic way, this is how the storyline of the video goes in chronological order:

1. M is looking at gun violence on the news on TV, ignores it and carries on with her day.
2. M gets mugged with at gun point, ignores it and carries on with her day.
3. M dies at the Disco due to gun violence.

All this to say that this type of violence keeps taking place all around us, but no action is taken, and we have almost become used to it -- we see it on the news, we see it happening around us. What Madonna is saying is that we cannot just carry on with our days as if this is a normal occurrence, because it shouldn't be and we must all fight it.

It's not enough to know that gun violence is happening, it's important to note that bad things happen when good people do nothing at all.

This is a call for us to engage with politicians, grassroots organisations, and fight for gun control.

This

Also I think it's being told in reverse to depict the fact that on this matter the society doesn't move on and evolve but rather things keep happening again and again as no change is being made. There's no progress.

Very well said and spoken. The shooting at the nightclub screamed PULSE all over it. I started choking up at that point. As artistic as it is, this is one of those videos that I’d need some time before watching it again because of how emotional I got.

Not to be a hater, but Ms Try Hard.

I guess you prefer artists who don't? try hard? Passion and commitment and seeing a vision through are uncool I guess? If only she had taken more notes of the Million Reasons music video.
