The thing a lot of conservative middle class people do not realize is this: That healthcare they are getting at work is anything but free. A decent low deductible PPO plan can easily cost over $1,000 a month, which, if their employer did not have to pay for, would result in their salary being increased. Any tax increase from medicare for all would be more than offset by a salary increase from their employer no longer having to pay $1,000/month behind the scenes from health care. It also would make salary negotiation more transparent: Right now companies will give middle class workers apparently higher salaries in their offers by not disclosing that they pay less for medical insurance during salary negotiations (high deductible plans and not paying for dependent’s medical insurance are things often times not disclosed during the salary negotiation stage). Because health care is what economics call “inelastic demand” (which means its demand is not affected by price), if we allow private companies to provide health care, the costs will go through the ceiling. This is why the only way to keep health care costs manageable is to have the government handle it and pay for it. There is a reason why every single other first world country has the government, not greedy hospitals and pharmaceutical companies, set prices for medical care.
