Yes, people should still be having safe sex, but having that security would've saved tens of thousands of us (maybe hundreds of thousands of us) that died in the 90s and could be a godsend for those currently affected by the epidemic (queer people and poor black communities). Sure but as I said, it's still not the 100% safe sex solution. I volunteered in the HIV centers in Israel, France and now in Costa Rica so I know what I'm talking about, the data is pretty much bad considering other STDs since the PrEP was introduced, the problem is that as long as the discussion and education about PrEP + keep on doing safe sex with condoms is not everywhere and good enough, it's not the ultimate solution, PrEP + condoms + education - this is the program that Kamla needs to push to! So sploosh your juice all over me you Riverboy

And I'm saying this as a progressive myself. I'd vote Bernie or Elizabeth before anyone else. I'm just viewing all of these promises objectively. I mean, okay fair enough but like, why would u compare them? Kamala has plenty of plans that are massive and would be hard to get passed, for example she has a tax plan that would be more expensive then both student loan forgiveness and the gop tax scam that passed in 2017. Bernie and Elizabeth meanwhile, have proposals that are smaller and may be easier to pass. Bernie has plenty of programs that would cost minimal cash such as universal school lunch. Same with Elizabeth. Im not trying to argue semantics, it just seemed on the surface like shade to Bernie and I think that’s how it reads to other people, so I just felt the need to respond. I’m not questioning ur credentials as a progressive or anything, I’m sure u r one.

PrEP is the best, most realistic protective measure we have against HIV and AIDS. People are going to have unprotected sex anyway; at least now they'll have a must greater chance of preventing the epidemic from spreading. Global coverage will be disastrous in the long run. HIV can become resistant to antiretroviral drugs. HIV is not resistant to PrEP now, as far as we know (at best there's only 1% of HIV resistant to PrEP), but if everyone starts taking PrEP the chances of getting resistant will increase. And too many people are taking it now. Plus, there are dozens of other STDs that are way more easy to catch while doing unprotected sex (eck, you can get gonorrhea for unprotected oral sex, and who doesn't do that). Luckily, they're curable (until they become resistant to antibiotics). I agree with @River, PrEP is one of the worst decisions in HIV control. An awful excuse to not use condoms, be careless and forget about sex education.

Didymus 34,380
Mess at the conservative responses here Don't shame gays for wanting condomless sex omg, don't act like straights wouldn't riot if they banned the pill and forced everyone to wear condoms Giving a blowjob without a condom (and who doesn't) is literally more dangerous than having sex with PrEP. Stop being hysterical about it Not everyone is gonna take it and those that do take it won't suddenly change personalities and having bareback dungeon orgies every other week. All medical authorities advise to combine PrEP with condoms anyway. If there are gays out there who are too ****ing stupid to take that advice then that's on them tbh. Clearly for them it's a risk worth taking.
imnotyourbabe10 6,120
Isn't PrEP a good thing, inherently? Reducing HIV transmissions? Yes, we would be more delusional than thinking LG6 is coming this summer if we were to assume that people would by virtue take safer steps whilst on PrEP. My doctor told me, "Yes, it has reduced HIV transmission but we are seeing an increase in other STIs." As much as that sucks, at least many others are treatable. And yes, using condom while on PrEP is a great idea. And, anecdotally speaking, I find myself taking better self-care while on PrEP (getting tested regularly and understanding/destigmatizing undetectability and so forth) We have to look out for communities (especially marginalized ones) without moralizing them. I do believe that sexual practices are socialized (e.g., people watch p0rn and then perhaps desire the act and leads to risky behavior). Whatever the case may be, thank goodness for PrEP and it should be easily accessible to every sexually active adult. We can have a philosophizing convo about sexualities and decision making around them elsewhere. Bottom line: PrEP is reducing HIV transmission with minimal side effects
HorusRa2 5,005
I can appreciate the fact she’s coming forward with policy; however, most of this could be resolve (not entirely) through a Medicare for all single payer program (that to be fair she co-sponsored). She just needs to follow her political instincts and not listen to the consultants who are in her ear on how to win. Not that I want her to win because I’m all in for Bernie but that would be my advice to her.
