exactly this.

She literally has gay characters in her books. Lets NOT jump to conclusions.

How is that even related to trans issues, esp. in a context of feminism...

Gay characters ? Did you ever hear the term of Gay baiting ? I suggest you inform yourself on the matter.

She never portrayed Dumbledore as gay in her books, if that is what you're talking about. Only afterwards, when she had nothing to loose, she referred to him as gay. That is the definition of gay bait.

I attended every premiere of the HP saga but that doesn't mean we have to deny her actionism.

It is also a myth to believe, that prior to social media artists were void of criticism regarding their private beliefs. It made it more accessible to the public yes. We can appreciate Martin Luthers reform of the church but must not forget, that he was a raging antisemite.

Oh dear, no worries :laughga: I didn't mean for my post to be that kind of reply. It's totally understandable that you responded that way and I think most people would

I just don't think many people here know about radical feminism and how some of the women involved in that movement are in fact transphobic. It took me a while to disentangle tolerance for gay people and transgenders too because I just figured they automatically go hand in hand, but it turns out they don't and that's important to emphasize in this specific case because Rowling is liking and following exactly those radical feminists :koons: And that can actually co-exist with her general pro-LGB stance.

Cancel Culture reaching yet again.

Sure it seems like pandering from a 2019 lens, but if you guys were around 12 years ago when JK confirmed Dumbledore's sexuality you might be more skeptical.

Gay culture was not mainstream or accepted then - Lady Gaga wasn't a thing for example, there was no corporate pride month or pandering to LGBTQIA+ individuals.  We didn't matter.

Clickbait title btw

I'm sorry I'm not gonna give her the benefit of the doubt. My judgement will be based on what it looks like, the sis liked transphobic posts before and now followed a transphobic person. For now, this makes me disappointed in her and look down upon her (not that it effects her bank account). Once she clarifies things and she has a valid reasoning for following this person, then I'll recall how I feel about it all. Heck, I don't even have to apologize about it like I misinterpreted or misunderstood her because she put herself in a context to be misinterpreted/misunderstood. Y'all are saying don't jump to conclusions, well don't be bias that your beloved Harry Potter writer doesn't actually have transphobic beliefs.

Just leave her alone... she is one of the greatest writer in the world and she can has own opinion.
Do not impose your views on others.

If her ‘opinion’ disrespects a marginalised community then no we won’t leave her alone. I’m not saying whether she is or isn’t transphobic, but this idea that “she’s beyond criticism because she’s a good writer” is nonsense.

but the books weren't about Dumbledore so why should she explicitly state it? It was very clear for me that Dumbledore was in love with Grindelwald while reading DH

I was around lol.

And yes, that did feel revolutionary. But what you don't seem to understand is that spreading tolerance for gays, lesbians and bisexuals is not the same thing as accepting transgenders. Like I've said, she's liking and following radical feminists, and transphobia is a thing in radical feminism, like it or not. Those people aren't against gays either. But it's just a completely different subject. That's why it makes no sense to keep bringing up her pro-LGB stance.

Cancel culture :bye:

I can almost guarantee you she is NOT transphobic. Following someone on Twitter is not confirmation on any belief system.

I don't really get the hate she gets. Even if this was true ( which I honestly doubt ), there's still far too many people to "cancel" before her.

She's done so much good in the world though charity that she'll have my admiration and respect forever. Let's talk about that.

They say it's the last song. They don't know us, you see. It's only the last song if we let it be.

Yeah, it sucks to lose a childhood idol, but it doesn't suck as much as it does to be a transgender kid or adult in most parts of the country/the world.

My niece is 7 and trans, and she's not allowed to use the same restroom as all the other kids. :( Her school allows her to use the nurse's office's bathroom, but she has had several accidents at school because of it... And that is just one very real-life way that trans people suffer from oppression that is still way too overt and systemic to be treated with any intellectual attitude of healthy contrarianism/devil's advocacy/etc... Trans rights are not a "culture war"---it's still a literal fight for their lives and basic well-being. At a certain point, a spade is a spade is a pattern that can't be ignored, and I've reached that point with JK. No one "accidentally" acts transphobic in various ways over many years.

I guess she's lost touch with the trials of everyday people, sittin' up there in her lil castle or flat or glen or whatthe****ever the rich UK is.

JK, you didn't seem up to writing anything compelling after Harry Potter anyway, but let me just say: you cancelled, gurl.
